Patna to Get a World-Class Railway Terminal Like Mumbai: ₹95 Crore Modern Infrastructure to Be Ready in 18 Months

KKN Gurugram Desk | Patna, the capital of Bihar, is all set to get a world-class railway terminal similar to Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus. The upcoming terminal is being constructed across 4.80 acres at a cost of ₹95 crore and is expected to transform the passenger experience by offering modern facilities, reducing congestion, and enhancing connectivity across northern Bihar.

The foundation stone for the terminal was laid virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his two-day visit to Bihar. While inaugurating several development projects from Bikramganj, he also launched the construction of this modern terminal in the presence of state and railway officials.

What Makes the New Patna Railway Terminal Special?

1. Strategic Location and Area
The modern terminal will be built in front of Hardinge Park (Veer Kunwar Singh Park), just west of the existing Patna Junction. Spanning 4.80 acres, the terminal is designed to ease the burden on Patna Junction and offer a seamless, modern commuting experience.

2. ₹95 Crore Investment
The total estimated cost for this project is ₹95 crore. This budget includes infrastructure development, terminal facilities, connectivity, and modern amenities for passengers.

3. Completion Timeline
The railway authorities have targeted an 18-month timeline for the completion of this terminal. According to sources, construction is progressing steadily, and a 3D model of the project is expected to be released by June 15, 2025.

4. Number of Platforms and Train Handling Capacity
The terminal will feature five platforms and is expected to handle 85 passenger trains per day. This will provide much-needed relief to Patna Junction and serve over 100,000 commuters daily.

Train Routes and Operational Benefits

Once operational, the terminal will facilitate the running of over 85 MEMU and local passenger trains, mostly connecting towns and cities in northern and central Bihar. Key routes expected to operate from this new terminal include:

  • Patna to Muzaffarpur

  • Patna to Hajipur

  • Patna to Barauni

  • Patna to Raxaul

  • Patna to Jayanagar

  • Patna to Islamapur

  • Patna to Chhapra

  • Patna to Buxar

  • Patna to Rajgir

  • Patna to Tilaiya

  • Patna to Kiul

  • Patna to Jhajha

Note: Interestingly, the Patna-Gaya railway line will not be connected to this terminal, and its operations will continue as before.

Passenger Facilities: Inspired by Airports

The terminal is designed with the aim of offering an airport-like experience to rail passengers. Some of the confirmed features include:

  • Digital Ticketing Counters

  • AC Waiting Halls

  • Clean and Accessible Toilets

  • Lifts and Escalators

  • Modern Food Court

  • Passenger Wi-Fi & Charging Stations

  • CCTV Surveillance for Safety

  • Underground Passageways for Platform Access

  • Washing Yards for Trains

These developments aim to decongest the current railway station and provide passengers with modern, comfortable, and safe travel options.

Seamless Connectivity with Patna Metro

The new terminal will be integrated with the upcoming Patna Metro network. It will be directly connected to both the metro station and the existing Patna Junction via a joint parking space and access corridors. This integration ensures that passengers can switch between rail and metro seamlessly, improving overall urban mobility.

Economic Impact: Employment and Growth

In addition to benefiting passengers, the terminal is expected to generate employment opportunities in the region. Jobs will be created for security, maintenance, cleaning, and operational services. Permanent roles will emerge as the terminal becomes a central hub for passenger movement in Bihar.

This terminal, while being a transportation project, is also a symbol of urban regeneration and economic stimulation for Patna.

3D Model Preview and Public Involvement

A 3D visualization model of the Patna modern railway terminal is expected to be unveiled by June 15, 2025. This will give citizens and stakeholders a comprehensive view of the final design, passenger flow, aesthetics, and logistical planning. Local feedback will also be considered during construction phases.

Broader Development Vision in Bihar

The Patna terminal is part of a broader strategy by the central government to modernize railway infrastructure across India. Alongside the new terminal, Prime Minister Modi also inaugurated the upgraded Patna airport terminal and laid the foundation for numerous other infrastructure projects during his Bihar visit.

Such multi-modal development ensures holistic growth and connectivity across all transportation sectors—rail, road, and air—leading to stronger economic and logistical integration of the region.

The new modern railway terminal in Patna is more than just a station—it is a transformative project that signifies progress, modernization, and efficiency in public transport. With advanced features, strategic location, and strong government support, this terminal is expected to become a benchmark for future railway developments across the country.

As construction progresses and the 3D model is revealed, excitement is growing among residents and travelers alike. By the time it’s completed, Patna’s terminal will not only be an architectural highlight but a symbol of the city’s rapid transformation into a smart, connected, and modern urban center.
