KKN Gurugram Desk | The renowned Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj witnessed an unexpected controversy as Abhey Singh, popularly known as the “IITian Baba”, was expelled from the prestigious Juna Akhara. Singh, an IIT-Bombay graduate-turned-saint, gained significant attention during the Kumbh Mela for his modern outlook, viral social media presence, and engineering background. However, his expulsion was triggered by allegations of using abusive language against his Guru, Mahant Someshwar Puri, violating the sacred Guru-Shishya (master-disciple) tradition.
The Juna Akhara, one of the most revered Hindu monastic orders, upholds strict principles of discipline, devotion, and respect for the Guru. According to Mahant Hari Giri, the Chief Patron of Juna Akhara:
“The act of Abhey Singh goes against the Guru-Shishya tradition and the principles of Sanyas. Disrespecting one’s Guru is equivalent to disrespecting Sanatan Dharma and the Akhara itself. No one is above the rules—not even me, let alone someone like Singh.”
The disciplinary committee of the Akhara recommended Singh’s expulsion after he reportedly used offensive language against his Guru. Singh has also been banned from entering the Akhara camp or its surroundings until he apologizes and proves his adherence to the Akhara’s principles.
Abhey Singh became an overnight sensation during the Kumbh Mela due to his viral interviews, where he discussed his transition from aerospace engineering to sainthood. With over 1 lakh Instagram followers, Singh gained popularity for his reels and modern take on spirituality. However, his controversial statements, including calling his father “Hiranyakashyap” and referring to his Guru as “Pagal” (mad), sparked outrage within the Akhara.
This incident led to widespread demands from senior saints for disciplinary action, culminating in his expulsion.
Abhey Singh’s life took an unconventional turn when he left his lucrative career as an aerospace engineer after graduating from IIT-Bombay. Inspired by spirituality, he joined the Juna Akhara under the mentorship of Mahant Someshwar Puri. Singh’s unique background and modern communication style attracted widespread media coverage, making him a household name.
During the Maha Kumbh 2025, his story captured public interest as he balanced traditional asceticism with a contemporary approach to connecting with the youth. However, this balance was overshadowed by the controversy surrounding his behavior.
The incident has sparked mixed reactions from the public and the religious community:
Poll Results:
Do you agree with religious organizations imposing strict codes of conduct?
- Yes, it ensures credibility and respect: 67%
- No, sometimes the actions can be too harsh: 33%
Juna Akhara is known for its stringent rules and code of conduct. Speaking on the incident, Mahant Hari Giri emphasized that:
The expulsion has dealt a significant blow to Abhey Singh’s reputation. Despite his popularity as a modern spiritual leader, his actions have tarnished his image among traditional religious circles. His controversial reel calling his Guru “Pagal” has particularly drawn widespread criticism, raising questions about his commitment to the principles of Sanatan Dharma.
For now, Abhey Singh remains barred from participating in Juna Akhara activities. According to Mahant Hari Giri:
“Abhey Singh will only be allowed to return once he learns to respect his Guru and adheres to the discipline of the Akhara.”
It remains to be seen whether Singh will publicly apologize or attempt to rebuild his image in the spiritual community.
The expulsion of IITian Baba Abhey Singh from Juna Akhara highlights the importance of discipline and respect in spiritual traditions. While Singh’s unique background and modern communication style initially made him a popular figure, his actions have sparked debates about the balance between tradition and contemporary approaches in religion.
For the Akhara, the decision reinforces their commitment to preserving the sanctity of Sanatan Dharma and the Guru-Shishya tradition, sending a clear message that no one, regardless of fame, is above the principles of sainthood.
