KKN Gurugram Desk | The JoSAA Counselling 2025 first round seat allotment results for BTech admissions have been officially released. Candidates can now visit the official JoSAA website josaa.nic.in to check their seat allocation status for various prestigious institutes including IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs.
This year, JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) is managing the admission process for 127 engineering institutes, with a combined total of 62,853 BTech seats. Students allotted a seat in the first round must complete online reporting between June 14 and June 18, or risk being excluded from the counselling process.
JoSAA Counselling 2025: Key Figures and Participating Institutes
The seat allotment process includes:
-

Seat Acceptance and Online Reporting: What You Must Do
All students who receive a seat in the first round are required to complete online reporting between June 14 and June 18. Failing to do so will result in automatic cancellation of the allotted seat.
Seat Acceptance Fee
-
General, EWS, and OBC-NCL candidates: ₹30,000
-
SC, ST, and PwD candidates: ₹15,000
Once the payment is made, candidates must upload required documents for verification.
Documents Required for JoSAA 2025 Reporting
During the online reporting window, students need to scan and upload the following documents:
-
Class 10 and 12 mark sheets
-
JEE Main or JEE Advanced admit card
-
Category certificate (for SC/ST/OBC/EWS)
-
Medical certificate
-
Canceled cheque for bank verification
Important:
-
OBC and EWS certificates must be issued after April 1, 2025
-
Document verification will be done by JoSAA authorities
-
If any discrepancy is found, students must respond and correct it by June 19, 2025, or the seat will be cancelled
What Do Freeze, Float, and Slide Mean in JoSAA Counselling?
During the online reporting stage, students have to select one of the three seat acceptance options:
Freeze
-
Select if you’re satisfied with your allotted seat and do not wish to participate in further rounds of counselling.
Float
-
Choose if you’re open to upgrading to a better course in any other preferred institute, as per your choice list.
Slide
-
Opt if you want to upgrade to a better branch in the same institute you’ve already been allotted.
These choices help students navigate their preferences strategically across counselling rounds.
No Branch Change Option in 12 IITs This Year
In a significant update, 12 IITs have scrapped the option for branch change after the first year of BTech. This comes as a blow to students who often opt for lower-ranked branches in top IITs with the hope of upgrading later.
IITs That Have Discontinued Branch Change (2025):
-
IIT Bombay
-
IIT Mandi
-
IIT Kharagpur
-
IIT Hyderabad
-
IIT Madras
-
IIT Patna
-
IIT Dhanbad
-
IIT BHU (Varanasi)
-
IIT Jammu
-
IIT Dharwad
-
IIT Bhilai
-
IIT Goa
This means that once a student is admitted to a particular branch in these institutes, they must continue in the same stream throughout their BTech program.
IITs Still Allowing Branch Change in 2025
However, 11 IITs have retained the branch change policy, which offers students a chance to switch their branch at the end of the first year, based on their academic performance.
These IITs include:
-
IIT Delhi
-
IIT Kanpur
-
IIT Indore
-
IIT Jodhpur
-
IIT Gandhinagar
-
IIT Roorkee
-
IIT Ropar
-
IIT Palakkad
-
IIT Tirupati
-
IIT Bhilai
-
IIT Goa
This variation in branch change policies across IITs should be taken into account by students when choosing their institute preferences in JoSAA counselling rounds.
Strategic Advice for Students During Seat Allotment
-
Understand the freeze, float, and slide options clearly before making a decision
-
Choose the float or slide option only if you’re genuinely aiming for a better course or college
-
Double-check all documents before uploading—even a small error can lead to cancellation
-
Track JoSAA deadlines closely to avoid missing crucial steps
-
Read branch change policies of your allotted IIT or NIT before confirming your seat
With over 62,000 seats on offer and several elite institutes participating, the JoSAA Counselling 2025 is a gateway to India’s premier engineering education. The first round of seat allotment is only the beginning. Students must now act with caution, complete their online reporting on time, and make data-driven decisions regarding freeze, float, or slide.
