Javed Akhtar’s Sharp Rebuttal to Bushra Ansari: A Discourse on Identity, Partition, and Artistic Freedom

Published by

In a recent exchange that has garnered significant attention, veteran Indian lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar responded to Pakistani actress Bushra Ansari’s remarks concerning his criticisms of Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack. The dialogue between the two artists has opened up discussions on freedom of expression, historical grievances, and the complexities of Indo-Pak relations.

Background: The Pahalgam Attack and Akhtar’s Critique

On April 22, 2025, a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians. In the aftermath, Javed Akhtar, speaking at the Gauravshaali Maharashtra Mahotsav, condemned the attack and called for stringent action against those responsible. His statements were perceived by some in Pakistan as a direct critique of the nation, leading to varied reactions.

Bushra Ansari’s Response

Pakistani actress Bushra Ansari responded to Akhtar’s comments with a video message, wherein she criticized his stance and suggested that he should remain silent, drawing a comparison to Indian actor Naseeruddin Shah. She further insinuated that Akhtar faced discrimination in India, claiming he struggled to find housing in Mumbai due to his Muslim identity.

Akhtar’s Rebuttal: Asserting Independence and Addressing Historical Context

In an interview with The Lallantop, Javed Akhtar addressed Ansari’s remarks with a blend of sarcasm and seriousness. He questioned her authority to advise him on when to speak, emphasizing his autonomy and right to express his views.

“Who is she to tell me when to talk and when not to? She said Naseeruddin Shah stays quiet, so I should too. But who is she to decide when I should speak? Who gave her that right?” Akhtar stated.

Responding to the claim about housing discrimination, Akhtar recounted an incident from 25 years ago when his wife, actress Shabana Azmi, was denied the opportunity to purchase a flat in Mumbai due to her Muslim identity. He attributed this prejudice to the lingering trauma of Partition, noting that the property owner was a Sindhi Hindu refugee who had suffered displacement during the 1947 division.

“Yes, we Indians do have our internal issues. But when someone from outside points fingers, I am first and foremost an Indian. I won’t stay silent,” Akhtar asserted.

The Broader Implications

This exchange between Akhtar and Ansari highlights the enduring impact of historical events like Partition on contemporary societal attitudes. It also underscores the challenges artists face when their expressions intersect with national and religious identities.

Javed Akhtar’s response to Bushra Ansari serves as a reminder of the importance of artistic freedom and the need to address historical grievances with empathy and understanding. As discussions around identity and expression continue to evolve, such dialogues play a crucial role in fostering mutual respect and introspection.
