Iran Reopens Closed Airspace Exclusively for India

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | In a rare and powerful gesture of diplomatic goodwill, Iran has opened its restricted airspace exclusively for India to facilitate the emergency evacuation of Indian nationals, primarily students, stranded in its war-hit territories. This move, amidst the ongoing and intensifying Iran-Israel conflict, is being hailed as a significant victory for Indian diplomacy.

The development comes under Operation Sindhu, a coordinated mission launched by the Indian government to rescue its citizens trapped in conflict zones within Iran.

Operation Sindhu: India’s Bold Rescue Effort

Over the past week, Iran has been locked in a fierce military confrontation with Israel, involving widespread missile and drone attacks. In light of this, Iran had closed its airspace to international flights, leaving thousands of foreign nationals, including over a thousand Indians, stranded without exit options.

Amid this crisis, India launched Operation Sindhu—a multi-phase emergency evacuation plan aimed at bringing Indian students and citizens back to safety.

Under this operation:

  • A total of three evacuation flights have been scheduled.

  • Two flights are arriving in Delhi today (June 21): one from Mashhad around 11:30 PM, and another from Ashgabat around 3:00 AM.

  • A third flight is set to land on Saturday evening.

Iranian authorities have confirmed their cooperation by granting special clearance for these flights, despite a complete airspace shutdown for all other countries.

India Becomes Sole Exception to Iran’s Airspace Ban

This decision marks a rare diplomatic exception, with India being the only country granted access to Iranian airspace amid war. According to sources in the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Iranian government has made it clear that this special corridor is only open for India, highlighting the strength of bilateral relations and India’s neutral stance in the conflict.

Who Are Being Evacuated? Mostly Indian Medical Students

A large portion of the evacuees are Indian medical students, enrolled in institutions like Urmia Medical University in northern Iran. These students, many of whom hail from Jammu & Kashmir, were caught in the crossfire as missile strikes intensified across Iranian cities.

In fact, the first batch of 110 students had already reached Delhi late Wednesday via Armenia and Doha, thanks to coordinated efforts between the Indian, Iranian, and Armenian governments.

Today’s evacuation flights are expected to carry nearly 1,000 Indian nationals, with more in the pipeline if the security situation deteriorates further.

Indian Students Injured in Israeli Strikes

The situation on the ground remains tense. Officials at the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi have confirmed that some Indian students were injured in recent Israeli missile strikes. These individuals are currently under medical supervision in Tehran and are being monitored by both the Indian Embassy and Iranian foreign ministry.

Fortunately, no fatalities among Indian nationals have been reported so far.

Special Humanitarian Corridor Amid Conflict

The ongoing Iran-Israel war has seen the suspension of all commercial air operations across most Iranian regions. Missile strikes have targeted urban centers, including those near Mashhad and Urmia, prompting Iran to restrict civilian movement and enforce strict airspace closures.

Despite these challenges, a special humanitarian corridor has been carved out exclusively for India’s evacuation effort.

This corridor:

  • Is being protected by Iran’s military and civil aviation authorities.

  • Allows only chartered Indian evacuation flights to operate.

  • Is being treated as a diplomatic priority, with round-the-clock coordination between Tehran and New Delhi.

India Thanks Iran and Armenia for Support

Acknowledging the cooperation extended by Iran and Armenia, India’s Ministry of External Affairs issued an official statement thanking both countries:

“India is grateful to the governments of Iran and Armenia for facilitating the safe passage of our citizens during such difficult times. Their support has been crucial in the successful execution of Operation Sindhu.”

The statement emphasized that more such evacuations may follow depending on the evolving security situation in the region.

Public and Political Reaction in India

Back home, families of stranded students have expressed relief and gratitude after days of anxiety. Social media has been flooded with messages praising India’s prompt response and diplomatic agility.

Opposition leaders, too, have acknowledged the government’s swift action, even as geopolitical analysts debate India’s tightrope walk in West Asia, where it maintains strong relations with both Iran and Israel.

India’s Strategic Neutrality in the Iran-Israel Conflict

India has so far maintained a neutral stance in the escalating Iran-Israel conflict, urging restraint on both sides and advocating for diplomatic dialogue. Experts believe this neutrality played a key role in securing Iran’s exclusive airspace clearance.

Foreign policy commentator Dr. Ananya Roy told KKNLive:

“India’s ability to rescue its citizens while maintaining regional neutrality showcases a maturing global strategy. This evacuation isn’t just about logistics; it’s a symbol of India’s emerging humanitarian leadership.”

What’s Next in Operation Sindhu?

While three chartered flights are currently planned, more may be scheduled if the security situation worsens. The MEA has also set up 24×7 emergency helplines for Indians still stranded in various parts of Iran.

The Indian Embassy in Tehran is:

  • Coordinating safe zones for remaining nationals.

  • Working with local authorities to facilitate ground transport to airports.

  • Providing emergency documentation and medical aid to injured citizens.

Key Highlights at a Glance:

Event Detail
Operation Name Operation Sindhu

Major Departure Cities Mashhad, Ashgabat

As Indian evacuation flights touch down in Delhi, Operation Sindhu stands as a powerful testament to India’s global diplomatic clout, efficient crisis response, and humanitarian commitment. While the conflict in West Asia rages on, India has ensured that its citizens are not left behind in a warzone.

This bold move by Iran—opening its closed skies for India alone—may well go down as one of the most remarkable acts of bilateral trust in recent years.
