Intense Heat Expected Across India; Heatwave Alert in Five States, Active Monsoon in South India

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | As the mercury begins to rise, India is bracing for an intense heatwave in the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of escalating temperatures and heatwaves in various parts of the country, including several states in North and Central India. The next few days will see temperatures soar, with a heatwave expected in five states between June 9 and June 10, 2025. Meanwhile, the monsoon is predicted to become active again in Southern India, bringing some relief to the region.

Rising Temperatures and Heatwave Alert

The IMD has forecasted a steady increase in temperature over the next four to five days. Currently, the temperatures across the country are slightly below average, but they are expected to rise significantly in the coming days. A heatwave has been predicted in five states, including parts of North and Central India.

According to IMD’s senior scientist, Naresh Kumar, temperatures in the northwestern regions, particularly in western Rajasthan, are expected to soar, with heatwave conditions anticipated on June 9. Additionally, heatwave-like conditions are expected to affect southern Punjab, southern Haryana, southern Uttar Pradesh, and northern Madhya Pradesh on June 10.

Delhi and NCR: Rising Temperatures, No Heatwave Yet

In Delhi, temperatures are likely to climb up to 44°C in the coming three to four days. While a heatwave is not predicted, the capital will experience a rise in temperature by 2-4 degrees, which could reach 43-44°C. Despite the increase in temperature, the IMD has not issued any heatwave warning for Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) at this moment.

Heatwave Predicted in Five States

  • Rajasthan: Western Rajasthan is likely to face extreme heat conditions, with temperatures potentially crossing 45°C by June 9.

  • Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh: These regions are expected to experience heatwaves on June 10, with temperatures reaching above 40°C.

The IMD has warned the public to take precautions, including staying hydrated and avoiding direct exposure to the sun, as these extreme weather conditions can lead to health issues, particularly dehydration and heatstroke.

Monsoon to Become Active in Southern India

In contrast to the rising temperatures in the north, the monsoon is expected to become active again in Southern India. According to the IMD, Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu are expected to witness heavy rainfall over the next three to four days. This will bring much-needed relief to the people of these states from the oppressive heat.

Heavy rains will be particularly beneficial for Kerala, where the monsoon season has already begun to show signs of activity. The increased rainfall is likely to cool down the temperatures, providing some respite from the ongoing heatwave in other parts of India.

Maharashtra: Continuous Rains Bring Relief from Heat

Maharashtra has been experiencing heavy rainfall, especially in Mumbai and its surrounding areas. The IMD has issued a warning of heavy rains in Mumbai over the next few hours, which will bring much-needed relief to the residents of Maharashtra. The continuous downpour in the state is expected to significantly reduce the temperatures, helping to cool down the otherwise hot and humid conditions.

Maharashtra has long been battling extreme summer heat, and the rains are expected to provide a significant respite. While this rainfall is not likely to last for long, it will offer temporary relief from the scorching temperatures.

Heatwave Impact and Precautions

The rise in temperature and the forecasted heatwaves are expected to put a strain on daily activities, especially in urban areas. The IMD has urged citizens to take preventive measures during the ongoing heatwave. Here are some recommended precautions:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent dehydration.

  • Avoid Direct Sun Exposure: Limit outdoor activities, especially between 11 AM and 4 PM when the sun is the hottest.

  • Wear Light Clothing: Light, breathable fabrics help maintain body temperature.

  • Use Sunscreen: Apply sunscreen to protect skin from harmful UV rays.

  • Stay Indoors: If possible, stay inside air-conditioned spaces to avoid direct exposure to the heat.

As we move further into June, the weather is expected to fluctuate dramatically across India. While the northern regions prepare for a heatwave, southern India can look forward to an active monsoon, providing some relief. The IMD is keeping a close watch on the developments, and citizens are encouraged to stay updated with weather forecasts and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.

With temperatures on the rise, and a heatwave predicted in multiple states, the coming days could be challenging. However, the monsoon rains in the south should help mitigate the heat, ensuring that relief is on the horizon for many regions. Stay safe and informed, and follow weather advisories closely.
