KKN Gurugram Desk | India is a land of vast geographical and cultural diversity. From the snow-capped mountains in the north to the tropical climates in the south, the country experiences extreme variations in weather. While Jammu and Kashmir is battling heavy rainfall and landslides, causing significant destruction, several states in eastern and northern India are facing extreme heat conditions. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for several regions, indicating the potential for further extreme weather conditions in the coming days.

Jammu and Kashmir: Heavy Rainfall and Landslides Disrupt Normal Life

In the Jammu region, particularly in the Ramban district, torrential rains have caused massive destruction. The landslides triggered by the heavy rainfall have buried homes, damaged roads, and completely disrupted daily life. Ramban, a 14-kilometer stretch, is covered in rubble. Where life was thriving just a day ago, there is now silence, with devastated homes and infrastructure. The situation has worsened with the collapse of roads and bridges, and many villages are now isolated. The authorities have declared the closure of schools and colleges for the day on April 21, 2025.

The IMD had predicted adverse weather conditions, but the extent of the devastation was beyond expectations. Despite prior warnings, the region was unprepared for such an intense weather event. As of April 21, the IMD forecasts calm after the storm, with no additional severe weather events expected in the coming days.

IMD’s Forecast: Western Disturbance Changes Weather Patterns

The IMD’s predictions were spot on regarding the unpredictable nature of the weather. The Western Disturbance system, which is currently affecting Jammu and Kashmir, is expected to continue influencing the weather patterns in northern and central India for the next few days. The landslides in Jammu have led to the transformation of national highways into raging rivers, further complicating the relief efforts.

For the rest of the region, the weather is likely to calm down, but the situation remains fluid. The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure that relief reaches the affected people as quickly as possible.

Extreme Heat Waves in Odisha and West Bengal

While Jammu is reeling under the effects of rain and landslides, the states of Odisha and West Bengal are experiencing extreme heat waves. The temperature in several regions of Odisha has reached alarming levels. In Jharsuguda, the mercury hit a staggering 43.5°C, while several other regions such as Bolangir, Titilagarh, Sambalpur, and Sundargarh saw temperatures above 40°C.

The heat wave has also intensified in West Bengal, where the state government has announced early summer vacation for schools to ease the discomfort caused by the scorching temperatures. The heat is expected to persist for the next few days, making life challenging for residents. The government has taken measures to mitigate the effects by implementing summer vacations from April 30, which is earlier than the usual start date of mid-May.

Delhi, UP, and Bihar: Rising Temperatures and Dry Conditions

In the National Capital Region (NCR) and surrounding states like Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Bihar, residents are bracing for the rising heat. After experiencing some relief due to light rainfall and thunderstorms in the past few days, the temperature is expected to soar again. According to IMD’s latest forecast, the temperature in Delhi could reach as high as 43°C by the end of the week.

The heat wave will not be confined to Delhi alone. The states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Haryana are likely to experience similar temperature surges, with the mercury expected to exceed 40°C in several regions. Though light rainfall and winds have provided some respite from the heat in these regions, they will likely face hot and dry conditions in the coming days.

Impact of Rising Temperatures on Health and Daily Life

The ongoing heatwave is affecting various aspects of daily life in the affected states. Farmers are struggling to protect their crops from the intense sun, while urban residents are seeking refuge in air-conditioned spaces. Schools and colleges are adjusting their schedules to avoid exposing children to the scorching heat during peak hours.

Health officials have warned people to stay hydrated and avoid going out during the hottest parts of the day. Dehydration, heat stroke, and other heat-related illnesses are a significant concern during such extreme weather events. It is also advised that people avoid strenuous outdoor activities and seek shade as much as possible.

India’s diverse weather patterns are a double-edged sword. While some parts of the country face destruction due to unseasonal rainfall and landslides, other regions are grappling with extreme heat waves. The authorities are working tirelessly to provide relief to those affected, but the road to recovery will be long and challenging, especially for those whose homes and livelihoods have been destroyed in the wake of the recent weather events.
