IMD Issues Storm and Rain Alert for Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Kerala, and Bengal

Published by

KKN Gurugram Desk | The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather alerts for multiple regions across the country, including the National Capital Region (NCR), Mumbai, Kerala, and West Bengal. The alerts, which cover the period from May 23 to May 28, 2025, predict thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rainfall, and strong winds. These developments are expected to provide temporary relief from the scorching summer heat but may also lead to localized flooding, traffic disruptions, and health hazards.

Delhi-NCR Weather Alert: Thunderstorms and Rain on the Way

For residents of Delhi and the surrounding NCR region, the IMD has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall on May 23 and 24. This change in weather is likely to bring down the prevailing high temperatures and provide respite from persistent humidity.

  • May 23-24: Thunderstorms, strong winds, and moderate rain expected.

  • May 25-26: Partly cloudy skies with isolated thunder and lightning.

  • May 27: Light rainfall with possible thundershowers.

The IMD advises residents to stay indoors during storm events, avoid sheltering under trees during lightning, and secure loose items on rooftops and balconies. Commuters are warned of potential delays and waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Mumbai Under Orange Alert for Heavy Rain and Strong Winds

Mumbai and parts of Maharashtra’s Konkan region are also bracing for severe weather. The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for May 23–25, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds. This alert is triggered by the formation of a low-pressure area over the east-central Arabian Sea, off the southern Konkan and Goa coasts.

Key Points for Mumbai:

  • May 23-25: Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and possible urban flooding.

  • Cause: Developing low-pressure system in the Arabian Sea.

  • Precautionary Advice: Avoid unnecessary travel, monitor flood-prone zones, and ensure drainage systems are cleared.

With Mumbai already vulnerable to flooding during the monsoon season, authorities have been asked to remain on high alert. Emergency services and municipal corporations are reportedly preparing for a rapid response if the situation escalates.

Kerala Braces for Heavy Rainfall and Orange Alerts Across Multiple Districts

Kerala is expected to witness intense rainfall activity from May 24 through May 26. IMD has issued Orange Alerts in several districts, including Kannur, Kasaragod, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram.

  • May 24–26: Heavy rainfall in Kannur and Kasaragod.

  • May 25–26: Alerts extended to Kozhikode and Wayanad.

  • May 26: Heavy rain forecasted for Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram.

Additionally, Yellow Alerts have been issued across various other districts from May 23 to 26, indicating the possibility of significant rainfall with potential local disruptions. The state disaster management team has been mobilized, and fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea due to rough conditions.

West Bengal Weather Warning: Heavy Rain Expected From May 28

Moving eastward, the IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in coastal areas of West Bengal beginning May 28, driven by an impending low-pressure area expected to form over the Bay of Bengal.

  • May 28 onwards: Heavy rainfall with thunder and lightning expected.

  • Impacted Areas: Coastal districts of West Bengal and potentially parts of Odisha.

This rain pattern could intensify further if the low-pressure system develops into a depression or cyclone. Local authorities are monitoring the situation and preparing for evacuations if needed.

Telangana Under Yellow Alert for Thunderstorms

The state of Telangana has also been placed under a Yellow Alert for May 23, with the IMD predicting thunderstorms, moderate rain, and lightning strikes in several districts.

  • Current Conditions: Widespread moderate to heavy rainfall in isolated regions.

  • Forecast: Continuation of stormy conditions over the next few days.

Residents are advised to remain indoors during lightning events and take necessary precautions against waterlogging and wind damage.

Cumulative Impact Across India: Weather Outlook May 23–28

Region Dates Alert Level Expected Conditions
Delhi-NCR May 23–27 Yellow Alert Thunderstorms, rainfall, temp drop
Mumbai May 23–25 Orange Alert Heavy rain, strong winds, flooding
Kerala May 24–26 Orange Alert Intense rain, local flooding
West Bengal From May 28 Pre-warning Coastal rain, possible storm development
Telangana May 23 Yellow Alert Thunderstorms, lightning

Safety Precautions and Recommendations

Authorities across states have issued the following guidelines for public safety:

  1. Avoid outdoor activity during thunderstorm alerts.

  2. Do not shelter under trees during lightning activity.

  3. Stay updated with IMD advisories via mobile apps and websites.

  4. Secure windows, balconies, and rooftops to prevent storm damage.

  5. Use public transport carefully as traffic may be disrupted due to flooding or waterlogging.

  6. Fishermen in coastal areas should avoid venturing into deep sea.

What’s Driving This Weather Activity?

The current weather volatility is attributed to multiple low-pressure systems developing over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. These systems typically mark the onset of pre-monsoon activity and are precursors to the southwest monsoon season.

According to meteorologists, the Arabian Sea low is expected to intensify within 36 hours, while the Bay of Bengal system may evolve into a larger cyclonic formation around the end of May.

From the capital region to coastal belts and southern states, much of India is facing a week of unstable and potentially hazardous weather conditions. The IMD’s advance alerts are a crucial warning for citizens and local administrations to stay vigilant and take proactive safety measures.

Whether you’re a resident of Delhi, a commuter in Mumbai, a farmer in Kerala, or a coastal dweller in Bengal, this is the time to monitor updates regularly and stay indoors when necessary. As climate patterns grow more erratic, preparedness becomes not just a precaution — but a necessity.
