Government Committed to Armed Forces Welfare: PM Modi on Army Day

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the nation on the occasion of Army Day, paid heartfelt tributes to the courage, dedication, and professionalism of the Indian Army. He reiterated his government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of armed forces personnel and their families.

Army Day, celebrated annually on January 15, is a day of immense pride for every Indian. It marks the momentous occasion when General K.M. Cariappa, who later became a Field Marshal, took over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army in 1949.

Indian Army: The Pillar of National Security

PM Modi emphasized the pivotal role played by the Indian Army in securing the nation’s sovereignty. In his post on X (formerly Twitter), he remarked:
“Today, on Army Day, we salute the unwavering courage of the Indian Army, which stands as the sentinel of our nation’s security. We also remember the sacrifices made by the brave hearts who ensure the safety of crores of Indians every day.”

Beyond the Borders: Army’s Role in Nation Building

The Prime Minister highlighted that the Army’s contributions extend far beyond protecting borders. From aiding civilians during natural disasters to playing a key role in international peacekeeping missions, the Indian Army has consistently showcased its humanitarian values.

Instances like the Indian Army’s swift response during earthquakes, floods, and other calamities stand as a testament to their dedication toward serving humanity.

Government’s Reforms for Armed Forces Welfare

PM Modi outlined the reforms and policies introduced by his government over the years, focusing on the modernization of the armed forces and improving their welfare. Some notable initiatives include:

  1. One Rank One Pension (OROP):
A landmark policy ensuring that veterans receive uniform pensions, addressing a decades-old demand of retired personnel.
  2. Modernization of Weaponry and Infrastructure:
    • Introduction of advanced weapon systems, drones, and surveillance technologies.
    • Infrastructure development in border areas for better accessibility and logistics.
  3. Better Living Standards for Jawans and Families:
    • Enhanced facilities in cantonments, including better healthcare, education, and recreational amenities.
    • Scholarships for children of armed forces personnel under welfare schemes.
  4. Increased Budget Allocations for Defense:
The defence budget has seen a significant rise, focusing on strengthening India’s defence capabilities.

Army Day: A Glorious Legacy

Army Day is not just a commemoration of a historic milestone but also a day to honor the indomitable spirit of the Indian Army. It was on January 15, 1949, when General K.M. Cariappa took over the reins from General F.R.R. Bucher, marking the transition to Indian leadership in the military.

Why Army Day is Special

  • It serves as a reminder of the Army’s legacy and its vital role in shaping India’s post-independence history.
  • The day also recognizes the sacrifices of countless soldiers who laid down their lives in the line of duty.

On this day, parades and ceremonies are organized across the country, with the main event held in the national capital, New Delhi. Soldiers who have shown exemplary bravery are awarded for their valor and service.

Indian Army in the Eyes of the Nation

Emotional Connect with the Citizens

The Indian Army holds a special place in the hearts of every Indian. It symbolizes patriotism, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication to the nation. Whether it is safeguarding the borders during wartime or providing rescue operations during floods, the Army has always been a source of inspiration.

Instances like PM Modi celebrating Diwali with soldiers reflect the nation’s emotional connection with its armed forces. Such gestures reinforce the bond between citizens and the defenders of the nation.

Global Recognition

The professionalism of the Indian Army has been recognized globally. As one of the largest armies in the world, it has contributed significantly to United Nations peacekeeping missions, earning respect on international platforms.

Challenges Faced by the Armed Forces

Despite the government’s efforts, the armed forces continue to face challenges:

  1. Geopolitical Threats:
Constant tensions at borders, especially with neighbouring countries, demand a state of high preparedness.
  2. Budget Utilization:
While defence budgets have increased, ensuring optimal utilization for modernization and welfare remains critical.
  3. Mental Health and Stress:
Prolonged deployments in conflict zones lead to stress and mental health issues among soldiers. The government has initiated several measures, but more comprehensive steps are needed.

PM Modi’s Vision for the Armed Forces

The Prime Minister reaffirmed that modernization and welfare of the armed forces remain a top priority. His vision includes:

  • Strengthening Border Security: Deployment of advanced technology to monitor sensitive areas.
  • Self-Reliance in Defense: Promoting Indigenous production of defence equipment under the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
  • Skill Development for Veterans: Enabling soldiers to transition smoothly into civilian life post-retirement through reskilling programs.

Army Day is more than just a celebration; it is a tribute to the selfless service of the Indian Army. As PM Modi rightly said, the sacrifices of the brave soldiers inspire every Indian. The government’s focus on welfare and modernization ensures that the armed forces protect the nation effectively.
