KKN Gurugram Desk | In a horrifying incident on Thursday morning, a private passenger bus traveling from Bihar to Delhi caught fire while in motion on Kisan Path near Mohanlalganj, Lucknow. The fire claimed five lives, including two children, all reportedly from Bihar. The bus, packed with passengers, turned into a moving inferno as it continued to run for nearly a kilometer engulfed in flames.

How the Tragedy Unfolded: Fire on a Moving Bus

At around 5:30 AM, a private bus bearing registration number UP17 AT 6372, en route from Begusarai (Bihar) to Delhi, suddenly caught fire due to an alleged short circuit. The incident occurred near Kalli Paschim area on the Lucknow-Raebareli stretch of Kisan Path.

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire broke out near the engine compartment and rapidly spread across the cabin. Most of the passengers were asleep, unaware of the imminent danger. Within minutes, thick smoke and flames filled the bus.

Driver and Conductor Fled the Scene

In a shocking development, the bus driver and conductor reportedly jumped out and fled, leaving behind the passengers in chaos. The vehicle, still in motion, continued for almost one kilometer while engulfed in flames, worsening the situation for those trapped inside.

Survivors said they were awakened by screams and the heat from the fire. The panic caused many to rush toward the exits, but the iron bars on the windows obstructed their escape.

Death Toll: Five Confirmed Dead, All from Bihar

Authorities have confirmed the deaths of five passengers, including two young children. The victims are believed to be from Bihar. Here are the identities released so far:

  1. Laxmi Devi, wife of Ashok Mehta, aged approximately 55

  2. Soni, daughter of Ashok Mehta, aged around 26

  3. Devraj, son of Ramlal, aged about 3

  4. Sakshi Kumari, daughter of Ramlal, aged about 2

  5. One unidentified male victim

The deceased reportedly couldn’t escape due to either being seated far from the exit or being overcome by the flames before help arrived.

Emergency Response: Firefighters and Police on the Spot

Upon receiving distress calls from passersby, fire brigade teams from PGI Fire Station and police personnel from Sushant Golf City Police Station and PGI Police Station rushed to the spot. They broke open the bus windows with iron rods and helped passengers escape.

The fire was brought under control, and burn victims were immediately shifted to Trauma Centre, where doctors declared five individuals dead. According to police sources, the remaining passengers were rescued with no critical injuries reported.

Bus Had Around 80 Passengers Onboard

Survivors said that the bus was carrying around 80 passengers, mostly migrant laborers and families traveling to Delhi for work. Many of them were asleep when the fire broke out, which delayed their response.

Due to the swift movement of the fire and the negligence of the bus staff, passengers were left to rely on locals and emergency responders for rescue.

Initial Investigation: Short Circuit Suspected

According to preliminary findings by police and forensic teams, the cause of the fire appears to be an electrical short circuit near the driver’s dashboard. This triggered a flame that spread quickly due to inflammable interiors and possibly substandard wiring.

Authorities are examining whether the bus had:

  • Valid fire safety certifications

  • Working emergency exits

  • Fire extinguishers onboard

Public Outrage: Questions Raised on Private Bus Safety

The incident has triggered public outrage over the lack of safety regulations and monitoring for private transport services, particularly those operating long-distance routes from Bihar to Delhi.

Social media users and civil society groups have called for:

  • Immediate arrest of the driver and conductor

  • Strict action against the bus operator

  • Compensation for the victims’ families

Many passengers reported that basic safety features were absent, and the bus lacked emergency escape instructions.

Police Investigation Underway

A case has been registered, and Lucknow Police, along with the Transport Department, has begun a probe. As of now:

  • Efforts are being made to identify the unknown male victim.

  • CCTV footage from nearby toll booths and traffic points is being reviewed.

  • Search for the absconding driver and conductor is ongoing.

Officials confirmed that the bus belonged to a private travel operator from Bihar, and further action will be taken once the ownership is verified.

DCP and Senior Officials Visit the Site

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and senior administrative officials inspected the site and met survivors. A medical and psychological support team has also been arranged for those suffering trauma from the incident.

The District Magistrate’s office is coordinating with officials from Bihar to assist with the identification and repatriation of the bodies.

Legal and Administrative Action Expected

In the wake of this incident, legal action under sections related to:

  • Negligence causing death

  • Endangering public safety

  • Failure to follow transport laws

…is expected to be initiated against the bus company and individuals responsible.

The Transport Ministry of Uttar Pradesh has also stated that a review of fire safety compliance in inter-state buses will be conducted statewide.

Call for Transport Reform and Safety Audits

Transport safety experts have urged both Bihar and UP governments to:

  • Implement mandatory fire safety drills for buses

  • Ensure installation of smoke detectors and fire extinguishers

  • Introduce digital monitoring systems for long-distance buses

  • Penalize operators who violate safety standards

This incident is a grim reminder that neglecting basic fire preparedness can be fatal.

Victims’ Families Await Answers and Justice

Back in Bihar, families of the victims are in mourning. Local administrations in Begusarai and other towns have begun collecting information to reach out to next of kin.

Many of the deceased belonged to economically weaker sections, and their families are demanding:

  • Compensation

  • Free transport of the bodies

  • Government support for dependents

This tragedy on Lucknow’s Kisan Path once again highlights the urgent need for safety regulations, monitoring, and accountability in India’s road transport sector. The combination of mechanical negligence, human error, and administrative apathy has led to the loss of five innocent lives.

As investigations proceed and families grieve, the hope remains that this incident will lead to systemic reforms and that no passenger should ever again board a death trap on wheels.
