Delhi Weather Update: IMD Issues Red Alert as Heatwave Intensifies

Published on

KKN Gurugram Desk | Residents of the national capital are battling extreme heat as temperatures soar and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues a red alert for severe heatwave conditions. On Wednesday, Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 43.3°C, but due to high humidity and wind factors, the real-feel temperature (heat index) shot up to a scorching 50.8°C, making it the hottest day of the season so far.

This is the first time this year that the IMD has issued a Red Alert for heatwave in Delhi, warning of life-threatening conditions if adequate precautions are not taken.

Red Alert Issued by IMD: What It Means

According to the India Meteorological Department, a red alert is issued when extreme weather conditions are expected to impact large sections of the population, with potential health risks, especially for children, senior citizens, and people with pre-existing health conditions.

The IMD has urged residents to:

  • Stay hydrated throughout the day

  • Avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure, especially during peak afternoon hours

  • Wear light clothing and stay in shaded or air-conditioned environments

  • Keep an eye out for early symptoms of heat exhaustion or heat stroke

Delhi Temperature Breakdown – Area-wise Highlights

  • Safdarjung: 43.3°C

  • Aya Nagar: 45.0°C

  • Palam: 44.5°C

Despite similar ambient temperatures, the heat index—also known as the “feels like” temperature—reached 50.8°C due to a combination of high humidity and wind patterns. Residents described the air as “burning hot,” with very few people venturing out during the afternoon.

What is a Heat Index or ‘Feels Like’ Temperature?

The heat index is calculated using three main elements:

  1. Ambient temperature

  2. Relative humidity

  3. Wind speed

When humidity is high, sweat evaporates slowly, making the body feel much hotter than the actual temperature. On Wednesday, Delhi’s humidity levels peaked at 73%, while wind speeds reached 33 km/h, combining to create a perceived temperature of 50°C+, a level where heatstroke becomes a serious risk.

 Wind Patterns and Heatwave Impact

  • Safdarjung experienced winds from the southwest at 22 km/h during the day, later increasing to 33 km/h.

  • Palam recorded similar westward winds at 20 to 33 km/h.

Despite the wind, no significant cooling effect was observed due to high humidity and intense solar radiation.

When Will Relief Arrive? Weather Forecast from June 13–17

There’s good news ahead for Delhi residents.

According to the latest forecast from IMD:

  • Heatwave-like conditions will continue through Thursday (June 12) with maximum temperatures between 44°C and 46°C.

  • From Friday (June 13) onwards, a gradual decline in temperature is expected.

  • Between June 13 and 17, the weather will begin transitioning due to western disturbances, bringing:

    • Partly cloudy skies

    • Dust storms and light showers in the evening or night

    • Gusty winds with speeds reaching 40-50 km/h, and occasionally up to 60 km/h

Health Risks Due to Heat Index Above 50°C

At a heat index of 51°C, several serious health issues may arise:

 1. Heat Stroke Risk

When the body temperature exceeds 40°C, internal organs such as the brain, kidneys, heart, and muscles can begin to fail. Without immediate cooling and medical help, heat stroke can become life-threatening.

 2. Sudden Drop in Blood Pressure

Excessive heat causes blood vessels to dilate, leading to a drop in blood pressure, which can result in dizziness or unconsciousness.

 3. Warning Signs to Watch For

If you or someone nearby experiences these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately:

  • Sudden cessation of sweating

  • Dry, red skin

  • High body temperature with chills or shivering

  • Nausea, vomiting, or fainting

Tips to Beat the Heat in Delhi

Here are some practical precautions to minimize heat-related health risks:

  • Drink 8–10 glasses of water daily, even if you’re not thirsty

  • Avoid caffeinated or alcoholic drinks

  • Use hats, umbrellas, or sunglasses while outdoors

  • Avoid strenuous activity between 12 PM and 4 PM

  • Keep a wet cloth handy to wipe face and neck regularly

  • Check on elderly and young children frequently

 Delhi Weather Forecast – June 12–17, 2025

Date Max Temp (°C) Min Temp (°C) Forecast
June 12 44–46 27–29 Heatwave, Red Alert in effect
June 13 42–44 26–28 Slight drop, dust and light breeze
June 14–15 40–42 25–27 Partly cloudy, light rain likely
June 16–17 38–40 24–26 Possible rain, thunderstorm expected

Delhi is currently in the grip of severe heatwave conditions, with real feel temperatures crossing 50°C. The IMD’s red alert is a clear indication that extreme caution is necessary. While a shift in weather is expected from June 13 onwards, the current situation remains potentially dangerous for vulnerable groups.
