Mandi Locals Extend a Helping Hand Amid Flash Floods
In the aftermath of the flash floods in Mandi district, locals rushed to support families affected by the calamity. Ration kits containing essential food items were distributed to around 110 families who had lost their homes or whose road access was cut off due to the flooding. The Chail Chowk Vyapar Mandal (traders’ union) took the initiative to provide assistance, aiming to ease the hardships of those affected by the natural disaster.
According to Raj Kumar Thakur, the president of the Vyapar Mandal, “All the traders decided to help those who have lost their homes or are stranded due to the disruption in connectivity.” The ration kits included 10 kg each of rice and wheat, along with oil and other food essentials to support affected families for 10 to 15 days.
As part of this initiative, local traders ensured that the relief reached those who needed it the most. The situation in Mandi has been dire, with continuous rainfall exacerbating the damage. Many parts of Himachal Pradesh, including Mandi, Kullu, Chamba, and Solan, have experienced significant disruptions in daily life, with damage to infrastructure and homes.

According to the latest updates from the Himachal Pradesh government, at least 69 people have lost their lives since June 20, with 43 deaths attributed directly to the rain-related disasters and 26 deaths caused by road accidents. Additionally, 37 people remain missing, and 110 people have been injured due to the floods and landslides. The extensive damage to infrastructure, roads, homes, and crops has compounded the challenges faced by the local population.
The ₹700 crore damage estimate reflects the significant losses in property, agricultural crops, and infrastructure.
