Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a significant diplomatic mission, beginning a week-long visit to five countries starting July 2, 2025. The tour includes Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia. The Prime Minister’s visit comes ahead of the BRICS Summit scheduled to be held in Rio De Janeiro and marks an important step in enhancing India’s relationships with key nations in the Global South.

In a statement issued on the day of his departure, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed India’s unwavering commitment to BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) as a vital platform for cooperation among emerging economies. He stated that the upcoming summit would be pivotal in advancing efforts to create a “balanced multipolar world order,” a vision that India strongly supports.

Itinerary and Diplomatic Significance of the 5-Nation Tour

Ghana – Strengthening Ties with the African Union

PM Modi began his diplomatic tour in Accra, Ghana, where he will hold bilateral talks with President John Dramani Mahama on July 2-3, 2025. Ghana, a respected partner in the Global South, plays a crucial role in the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

In his statement, the Prime Minister emphasized that his visit would further strengthen India-Ghana ties, especially in areas such as investment, energy, health, security, and development partnership. During his time in Ghana, PM Modi is also set to address the Parliament of Ghana, a moment expected to highlight India’s commitment to supporting African nations in their path toward sustainable growth and development.

Trinidad and Tobago – Celebrating Ancestral Bonds

From Ghana, PM Modi will travel to Trinidad and Tobago, where he will be hosted by Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar and President Christine Carla Kangaloo. This visit is particularly significant as it marks the 180th anniversary of the arrival of Indian indentured laborers to the island, a milestone that symbolizes the deep-rooted cultural and historical ties between India and the Caribbean nation.

Prime Minister Modi stated that the visit would serve as an opportunity to rejuvenate the special bonds of ancestry and kinship between the two nations. The visit also aims to further the bilateral relationship in areas such as trade, tourism, technology, and cultural exchanges.

Argentina – A Historic First Visit After 57 Years

PM Modi’s next stop will be Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he will undertake a historic bilateral visit — the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 57 years. Argentina holds significant importance in Latin America and is a key economic partner for India. The Prime Minister’s talks with President Javier Milei will focus on advancing cooperation in agriculture, critical minerals, energy, trade, tourism, technology, and investment.

India and Argentina also share a strong relationship within multilateral organizations such as the G20, and PM Modi looks forward to enhancing these collaborations further.

Brazil and the BRICS Summit – A Platform for Global South Cooperation

On July 6-7, 2025, PM Modi will arrive in Rio De Janeiro for the highly anticipated BRICS Summit. Brazil, as the host nation, plays a pivotal role in shaping the agenda for the meeting, which will bring together the leaders of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa to discuss global issues affecting emerging economies.

In his departure statement, PM Modi emphasized that as a founding member of BRICS, India is committed to strengthening this platform. The summit will focus on discussions related to global economic stability, inclusive growth, and multilateral cooperation. PM Modi also plans to meet with several world leaders on the sidelines of the summit to discuss further avenues for collaboration between the BRICS nations.

Following the summit, PM Modi will visit Brasilia for a State visit — the first by an Indian Prime Minister in nearly six decades. This visit will be an opportunity to deepen bilateral relations and advance priorities of the Global South in collaboration with Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Namibia – Celebrating Enduring Solidarity and Freedom

The final leg of PM Modi’s diplomatic tour will take him to Namibia, a country that shares a long history of decolonization struggles which India actively supported. PM Modi’s visit will strengthen India’s longstanding relationship with Namibia and provide a platform to reinforce shared commitments for freedom, peace, and development.

During the visit, PM Modi will meet Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Netumbo Nandi Ndaitwah and address a Joint Session of the Namibian Parliament. The visit is expected to bolster India-Namibia relations, focusing on trade, education, capacity building, and socio-economic development.

Global South Diplomacy: A Common Agenda for Emerging Economies

Throughout his diplomatic tour, PM Modi has stressed the importance of Global South cooperation in addressing key global challenges. He stated that his visits to these five nations will help strengthen India’s bonds of friendship across continents, from Africa to South America, and reinforce India’s leadership role in international platforms like BRICS, the African Union, and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

His engagements during this visit aim to foster multilateral cooperation, especially in the areas of trade, technology transfer, climate change, and sustainable development. PM Modi believes these efforts will not only benefit bilateral ties but also support global stability by promoting a fair, democratic, and multipolar world order.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 5-nation diplomatic visit serves as a testament to India’s growing influence on the world stage. Through this tour, India is positioning itself as a key player in shaping the future of the Global South and advancing the cause of emerging economies. From the BRICS Summit in Brazil to the historic visit to Argentina, this journey will serve as a cornerstone in building strong, resilient international partnerships for India.
