Operation Sindoor Fallout: Why France Is Angry at China Over Rafale Jets

The diplomatic atmosphere between France and China has grown tense following the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, a four-day military skirmish between India and Pakistan in May 2025. The trigger? A reported disinformation campaign allegedly orchestrated by China to tarnish the reputation of the French-made Rafale fighter jets, a move that Paris sees as a direct threat to its defense exports and geopolitical standing.

🇫🇷 What Sparked France’s Outrage?

According to a confidential French military intelligence report reviewed by the Associated Press, China allegedly used its embassies and defense attachés across Asia and Africa to spread doubts about the Rafale’s performance during Operation Sindoor. The campaign reportedly targeted countries that have purchased or are considering purchasing Rafale jets, with Indonesia emerging as a primary focus.

The report claims China engaged in “coordinated lobbying” to undermine the aircraft’s credibility and promote its own domestically produced fighter jets as superior alternatives.

 Operation Sindoor: The Catalyst Event

Operation Sindoor was a short but intense air conflict between India and Pakistan that took place over four days in May 2025. The confrontation saw a series of aerial dogfights and missile exchanges, particularly over Jammu and Kashmir and along the LoC.

Pakistan claimed to have shot down five Indian aircraft, including three Rafale fighter jets. While the Indian Air Force (IAF) acknowledged the loss of some aircraft, it did not provide detailed numbers. However, French Air Force Chief General Jerome Belanger confirmed the loss of one Rafale, one Sukhoi Su-30MKI, and one Mirage 2000 — the latter being an older French-origin aircraft.

If accurate, the incident marks Rafale’s first known combat loss, creating an opening for competitors to question its battlefield reliability.

 China’s Alleged Disinformation Campaign

French intelligence officials believe that China and Pakistan collaborated to launch an online disinformation campaign in the immediate aftermath of the operation. Tactics reportedly included:

  • Manipulated images of Rafale wreckage

  • AI-generated fake videos simulating dogfights and explosions

  • Social media accounts sharing misleading performance metrics

  • Video game footage passed off as real combat visuals

More than 1,000 fake social media accounts—many traced to Chinese servers—were reportedly involved in promoting pro-China, anti-Rafale narratives during and after Operation Sindoor.

While French analysts couldn’t directly link the campaign to the Chinese government, the role of Chinese embassies and defense officials in pushing the narrative during official meetings raised strong suspicions.

 China’s Denial

Responding to the allegations, China’s Ministry of National Defense in Beijing issued a sharp rebuttal:

“These claims are completely baseless and defamatory. China has always maintained a prudent and responsible approach to military exports and plays a constructive role in regional and global peace and stability.”

Despite China’s denial, the French government remains unconvinced, particularly given Beijing’s history of digital influence operations using state-sponsored influencers, fake news portals, and bot-driven social media manipulation on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and Facebook.

 Rafale’s Strategic Importance

The Rafale multirole fighter jet, manufactured by Dassault Aviation, has emerged as one of the most sought-after 4.5-generation fighter aircraft globally. It is currently in service with:

  • France

  • India

  • Egypt

  • Qatar

  • Greece

  • Croatia

  • Indonesia

  • UAE

For France, the export of Rafale jets is not just a commercial venture but a key pillar of its strategic defense diplomacy. The aircraft has been central to building partnerships in the Indo-Pacific, Middle East, and Africa — regions where China is also vying for military influence.

The controversy threatens to undermine French defense contracts, especially in Southeast Asia, where Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines are weighing multiple procurement options.

🇮🇳 India’s Response

India has remained largely tight-lipped about the incident. However, defense ministry sources confirm that a review of IAF’s combat strategy and aircraft performance during Operation Sindoor is underway.

While no official count of aircraft losses has been made public, Indian officials have defended the Rafale’s capabilities, calling it “the most advanced and lethal aircraft in the IAF fleet.”

Analysts believe India may be reluctant to disclose operational losses to avoid handing propaganda victories to Pakistan or China.

Geopolitical Fallout and What’s at Stake

This isn’t just about a fighter jet — it’s a high-stakes battle for global arms market share and regional influence.

For France:

  • The Rafale program contributes billions of euros in defense revenue.

  • It solidifies bilateral defense ties with emerging powers.

  • Losing credibility could lead to cancellation or reduction of future deals.

For China:

  • Promoting Chinese-made aircraft like the Chengdu J-10 and J-20 as viable alternatives.

  • Undermining France strengthens Beijing’s own arms export ambitions.

  • Weakening Western influence in the Global South is part of its long-term foreign policy strategy.

The Rafale controversy after Operation Sindoor is a prime example of how modern warfare extends far beyond the battlefield. In the age of social media and digital manipulation, perceptions matter as much as performance.

France is now battling not just for the honor of its premier combat aircraft, but for its credibility as a global defense partner. As tensions between democratic and authoritarian powers deepen, military hardware has become a new front in the propaganda war.
