Yoga Guru Ramdev Questions Mamta Kulkarni’s Anointment as Mahamandaleshwar of Kinnar Akhara at Maha Kumbh 2025

KKN Gurugram Desk | The ongoing Maha Kumbh 2025 has sparked a significant controversy after former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni was anointed as the Mahamandaleshwar of Kinnar Akhara. Several saints and religious leaders, including Yoga guru Ramdev, have expressed strong opposition to her appointment, questioning the legitimacy of her spiritual status.

Ramdev Criticizes Mamta Kulkarni’s Spiritual Transition

Yoga Guru Ramdev, known for his association with Sanatana Dharma and traditional Hindu values, has openly criticized the decision to confer the title of Mahamandaleshwar upon Mamta Kulkarni. During an interaction at the Maha Kumbh Mela, Ramdev expressed his concerns over the integrity of religious traditions.

“The Maha Kumbh is a sacred event deeply rooted in our spiritual heritage. It is a festival that upholds the essence of Sanatana Dharma, connecting people to their roots. However, some individuals are associating vulgarity, intoxication, and inappropriate behavior with this holy gathering. This is not the true spirit of Maha Kumbh,” said Ramdev, as reported by PTI.

Without directly naming Kulkarni, Ramdev hinted at how some individuals who were recently leading worldly lives suddenly attain high spiritual ranks, raising questions about the sanctity of such appointments.

“Some individuals who were indulged in worldly pleasures just yesterday, suddenly become saints or even attain titles like Mahamandaleshwar in a single day,” the yoga guru added.

Opposition from Religious Leaders and Saints

The controversy around Mamta Kulkarni’s transformation into a spiritual leader has led to opposition from several saints and religious groups. The title of Mahamandaleshwar is traditionally reserved for highly accomplished saints who contribute significantly to religious discourse and social upliftment. Many spiritual leaders and ascetics have raised objections to Kulkarni’s elevation, questioning whether she truly meets the spiritual and ethical standards required for this role.

Kinnar Akhara’s senior Mahamandaleshwar, Himangi Sakhi, has also voiced her disagreement, citing Kulkarni’s past controversies and lack of spiritual credentials.

Mamta Kulkarni’s Spiritual Transformation

The former Bollywood actress, Mamta Kulkarni, who rose to fame in the 1990s with movies like ‘Karan Arjun’ and ‘Baazi’, has reportedly undergone a complete spiritual transformation. On January 24, 2025, the 52-year-old actress formally renounced worldly life, took sanyas in Kinnar Akhara, and adopted the name Mai Mamta Nand Giri.

In an emotional address, Kulkarni shared that her journey into spirituality and ascetic life began in the year 2000. She credited Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, a prominent transgender spiritual leader, as her pattaguru (spiritual mentor).

“I began my penance (tapasya) in 2000. Today, Maa Shakti guided me to choose Laxmi Narayan Tripathi as my spiritual mentor. This is a divine calling, and my transformation into Mai Mamta Nand Giri is a step towards self-realization,” said Kulkarni.

Pind Daan Ceremony and Religious Acceptance

Following her anointment, Mamta Kulkarni performed her own ‘Pind Daan’ on the banks of the River Ganga, symbolizing her complete detachment from her past life. This practice is common among sanyasis who renounce their former identity and embrace a new spiritual journey.

Despite her initiation, several traditional religious groups are unwilling to accept her as a legitimate Mahamandaleshwar, with critics arguing that she lacks decades of spiritual practice and devotion, which are typically required to attain such an esteemed position.

Past Controversies Surrounding Mamta Kulkarni

Mamta Kulkarni’s sudden rise to spiritual leadership has also reignited discussions about her controversial past. She was once a leading Bollywood actress, known for her glamorous roles in films during the 1990s. However, her career took a sudden turn when she withdrew from the film industry in the early 2000s and moved abroad.

In recent years, her name was linked to various legal cases, including allegations related to drug trafficking. Although she has always denied these allegations, her past continues to raise skepticism about her credibility as a spiritual leader.

Maha Kumbh 2025: A Sacred Event Amidst Controversy

The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, holds immense significance for Hindu devotees. It is a time when sages, saints, and spiritual seekers from across the country come together to perform sacred rituals and share religious teachings. The controversy surrounding Mamta Kulkarni’s anointment has, however, overshadowed some of the spiritual activities at the event.

The debate over Mamta Kulkarni’s elevation to Mahamandaleshwar at the Maha Kumbh 2025 continues to intensify. While she claims to have renounced the material world and embraced a spiritual path, her past life and the speed at which she attained a high religious title remain subjects of heated debate.

With Yoga Guru Ramdev, saints, and religious leaders voicing their discontent, the question arises: Should spirituality be earned over decades of devotion, or can it be attained through an immediate transformation? The answer will likely shape future discussions on religious legitimacy and the evolving landscape of Hindu ascetic traditions.
