Daya’s iconic laughter, quirky Gujarati accent, and endearing chemistry with Jethalal made her one of the most recognizable and loved characters on Indian television.
Over the years, several rumors have circulated about her comeback. While some reports hinted at her return, others speculated about new faces replacing her. However, nothing concrete ever materialized—until now.
In a recent interview, the show’s creator Asit Kumarr Modi finally dropped a strong indication that a return—either by Disha Vakani herself or a new Dayaben—is on the horizon.
When we talk about TMKOC, it’s impossible not to mention Dayaben. For almost a decade, Disha Vakani portrayed the lovable housewife from Gokuldham Society, winning hearts across all age groups. Her catchphrases like “Hey Maa, Mataji!” became part of pop culture, and her absence left a noticeable void in the show’s essence.
The actress took a maternity break in 2017, and even after becoming a mother of two, her full-time return to television has remained uncertain. Family commitments have kept her from resuming the role, despite multiple attempts by the makers to bring her back.
In a candid interview with The Indian Express, TMKOC’s producer Asit Modi acknowledged the show’s transformation after Disha’s exit. He said:
“The popularity of the show still exists. However, fans often tell us that they miss Daya Bhabhi, and honestly, I agree with them. The character brought a unique flavor that hasn’t been matched since her departure. I want to assure the viewers—we are working on it. Daya Bhabhi will return soon.”
This subtle but clear message has stirred excitement among fans, many of whom have stopped watching the show regularly due to the missing charm of the original character.
While Asit Modi still hopes to see Disha Vakani back, he also admitted that it may not be possible due to her personal commitments. “She is like my younger sister, and we still share a very close bond,” he shared. “But I have to be practical too. Her return may not be feasible. We’re now actively looking for someone who can match her energy and originality.”
He also confirmed that auditions have been held, and a few actresses have even been shortlisted. However, casting a new Dayaben is no easy task. “She’s not just a character. She’s a cultural icon. We can’t compromise on that,” he added.
As per Modi’s statements, the doors are still open for Disha. “We can only hope she returns. She was loved not just by the audience, but also by her co-stars and the crew. We miss her deeply.”
This gives fans a small window of hope, but also sets expectations: if not Disha, someone else will soon step into the role.
Earlier this year, media reports suggested that television actress Kajal Pisal was set to take over the role of Dayaben. However, Kajal herself denied the reports, stating that while she had auditioned for the role in 2022, she never heard back from the production team.
She clarified, “The news is baseless. Yes, I did audition long back, but there’s been no communication since. I wish them luck in finding the perfect fit for such an iconic role.”
Social media platforms are filled with nostalgia and speculation. TMKOC fans often express their love for the original cast and voice their disappointment at the delay in casting Dayaben. Many have called for Disha Vakani’s return, while others are open to a new face, as long as she can do justice to the character.
