Will Dayaben Return? Asit Modi Drops Strong Hint About TMKOC’s Most Awaited Comeback

Published by

KKN Gurugram Desk | Since the beloved actress Disha Vakani, who played Dayaben in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah (TMKOC), stepped away from the show in 2017, viewers have been eagerly waiting for her return. Daya’s iconic laughter, quirky Gujarati accent, and endearing chemistry with Jethalal made her one of the most recognizable and loved characters on Indian television.

Over the years, several rumors have circulated about her comeback. While some reports hinted at her return, others speculated about new faces replacing her. However, nothing concrete ever materialized—until now.

In a recent interview, the show’s creator Asit Kumarr Modi finally dropped a strong indication that a return—either by Disha Vakani herself or a new Dayaben—is on the horizon.

A Legacy Character That Defined Indian Sitcoms

When we talk about TMKOC, it’s impossible not to mention Dayaben. For almost a decade, Disha Vakani portrayed the lovable housewife from Gokuldham Society, winning hearts across all age groups. Her catchphrases like “Hey Maa, Mataji!” became part of pop culture, and her absence left a noticeable void in the show’s essence.

The actress took a maternity break in 2017, and even after becoming a mother of two, her full-time return to television has remained uncertain. Family commitments have kept her from resuming the role, despite multiple attempts by the makers to bring her back.

“I Agree With the Audience… Something’s Missing”: Asit Modi Opens Up

In a candid interview with The Indian Express, TMKOC’s producer Asit Modi acknowledged the show’s transformation after Disha’s exit. He said:

“The popularity of the show still exists. However, fans often tell us that they miss Daya Bhabhi, and honestly, I agree with them. The character brought a unique flavor that hasn’t been matched since her departure. I want to assure the viewers—we are working on it. Daya Bhabhi will return soon.”

This subtle but clear message has stirred excitement among fans, many of whom have stopped watching the show regularly due to the missing charm of the original character.

Finding the Next Dayaben: A Long and Difficult Search

While Asit Modi still hopes to see Disha Vakani back, he also admitted that it may not be possible due to her personal commitments. “She is like my younger sister, and we still share a very close bond,” he shared. “But I have to be practical too. Her return may not be feasible. We’re now actively looking for someone who can match her energy and originality.”

He also confirmed that auditions have been held, and a few actresses have even been shortlisted. However, casting a new Dayaben is no easy task. “She’s not just a character. She’s a cultural icon. We can’t compromise on that,” he added.

Will Disha Vakani Make a Surprise Return?

As per Modi’s statements, the doors are still open for Disha. “We can only hope she returns. She was loved not just by the audience, but also by her co-stars and the crew. We miss her deeply.”

This gives fans a small window of hope, but also sets expectations: if not Disha, someone else will soon step into the role.

What Happened to Kajal Pisal’s Casting Rumor?

Earlier this year, media reports suggested that television actress Kajal Pisal was set to take over the role of Dayaben. However, Kajal herself denied the reports, stating that while she had auditioned for the role in 2022, she never heard back from the production team.

She clarified, “The news is baseless. Yes, I did audition long back, but there’s been no communication since. I wish them luck in finding the perfect fit for such an iconic role.”

Audience Reactions: Mixed Emotions and High Expectations

Social media platforms are filled with nostalgia and speculation. TMKOC fans often express their love for the original cast and voice their disappointment at the delay in casting Dayaben. Many have called for Disha Vakani’s return, while others are open to a new face, as long as she can do justice to the character.

Here’s what some fans posted on X (formerly Twitter):

  • “TMKOC is incomplete without Dayaben. Either bring Disha back or close the character respectfully.”

  • “It’s been 5 years. We’re open to a new Dayaben but she has to be just as charming!”

  • “Asit Modi ji, thank you for listening to the audience. We hope this time it’s for real.”

The Stakes Are High for TMKOC

Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has been running successfully since 2008 and remains one of India’s longest-running sitcoms. However, since Daya’s departure, the show’s TRPs have seen ups and downs. Loyal viewers claim that while the show is still entertaining, it lacks the spark it once had.

The return—or recasting—of Dayaben could reignite interest in the show and attract both new viewers and old fans who had moved on.

Why It’s So Hard to Replace Disha Vakani

Recasting is common in television, but in TMKOC’s case, the character of Dayaben is so deeply associated with Disha Vakani’s persona that any replacement will inevitably be compared to her. The new actress will face the tough task of winning over audiences who have emotional attachments to the original portrayal.

Asit Modi’s hesitation reflects this challenge. The producers are aware that a rushed or miscast decision could backfire badly, further alienating the audience.

What’s Next for TMKOC?

With Modi confirming that a decision is imminent, fans can expect a major development in the coming weeks. Whether it is Disha’s grand return or a new actress taking over, the show seems set for a pivotal moment.

Industry insiders suggest that the production team may be timing Dayaben’s re-entry with a festive episode or special arc to maximize impact.

As TMKOC continues to evolve, the potential return of Dayaben—whether through Disha Vakani or a new face—could mark a turning point for the show. Asit Modi’s emotional yet pragmatic statements signal that something big is in the works.
