Devoleena Bhattacharjee’s Interfaith Marriage and Challenges Faced
Devoleena Bhattacharjee’s marriage to Shah Nawaz, which took place on December 14, 2022, was widely discussed in the media. The couple opted for a court marriage, which made their union even more special and intimate. The actress and Shah Nawaz’s marriage was celebrated despite the challenges they faced in bringing their families together, as interfaith marriages often encounter societal challenges in terms of acceptance and understanding.
Speaking about the difficulties in getting their families to accept the marriage, Devoleena shared that it wasn’t easy. The actress emphasized how they had to work on convincing their loved ones about the strength of their bond, transcending religious boundaries. Despite these challenges, Devoleena and Shah Nawaz’s relationship blossomed, and the two celebrated their love without letting societal norms hinder their happiness.
Devoleena Bhattacharjee’s Views on Her Son’s Religion
After the birth of her son in December 2024, Devoleena was asked about her child’s religion and which faith he would follow. The topic of interfaith children’s upbringing often sparks discussions, especially when it comes to religious identity and cultural influences. In a recent podcast with Paras Chhabra, Devoleena was questioned about her son’s potential religious identity, given her interfaith marriage.
Paras Chhabra jokingly asked Devoleena, “Abdul or Ram, what will your son grow up to be?” To this, Devoleena responded with a thoughtful and insightful answer, saying, “He is going to be an Indian, a total Indian, a Bharatiya.” She further explained that the values she and Shah Nawaz wish to impart to their child go beyond religion, emphasizing the importance of being a good person rather than focusing solely on religious labels.
Devoleena believes that the best thing she can teach her son is the values of love, kindness, and understanding that transcend religious identities. She explained, “I think we have such a beautiful concept. If we talk about the need for religion to live a certain lifestyle, then a child who is learning good things from both religions, becoming a better person, that is the best thing that can happen.”
A Religion-Free Upbringing: Letting Her Son Choose His Path
Devoleena emphasized that her son will have the freedom to choose his religion when he grows older and capable of understanding both faiths. She believes that each individual has the right to make their own decisions, especially when it comes to religious beliefs.
She elaborated, “I feel that why should I impose my religion on my child, or why should Shah impose his religion on him? When he is old enough to think and understand, he will see the beauty of both religions. I do prayers at home, he will see that. Shah offers Namaz and goes to the mosque, he will see that too.”
This progressive approach to raising children reflects a modern and open-minded view of religion. Devoleena firmly believes that the spiritual essence of both religions can coexist in harmony within her home, providing a diverse but unified foundation for her son.
