KKN Gurugram Desk | In a significant development, the upcoming Bollywood film Bhool Chuk Maaf, starring Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi, has canceled its scheduled theatrical release and will now stream directly on Prime Video starting May 16, 2025. The decision follows escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, and a nationwide increase in security protocols.
Initially slated for a May 9 theatrical premiere, the film’s producers, Maddock Films in association with Amazon MGM Studios, issued a public statement confirming the direct-to-OTT release citing national security and the emotional sentiment of the moment.
The producers released an official statement on Thursday morning explaining their decision:
“In light of recent events and the heightened security drills across the nation, we at Maddock Films and Amazon MGM Studios have decided to bring our family entertainer, Bhool Chuk Maaf, directly to your homes on May 16—only on Prime Video, worldwide.”
The statement continued, highlighting national priorities over business interests:
“While we were eagerly looking forward to celebrating this film with you in theaters, the spirit of the nation comes first. JAI HIND.”
Bhool Chuk Maaf is a romantic fantasy-comedy set in Varanasi, directed by Karan Sharma. The story follows Ranjan (played by Rajkummar Rao), a soon-to-be groom who finds himself caught in a time loop, waking up every morning on the day of his Haldi ceremony with no apparent escape.

Produced by Maddock Films, the movie blends slice-of-life storytelling with supernatural elements, promising a unique watch for family audiences.
With its digital premiere scheduled for May 16, Bhool Chuk Maaf joins the growing list of films that have opted for a direct-to-OTT release due to external events, including national emergencies and geopolitical tensions.
The film will be available exclusively on Prime Video across India and international markets.

Subtitled in multiple languages for global accessibility
The decision to shift to an OTT platform was prompted by the worsening diplomatic and military tensions between India and Pakistan. On April 22, a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, killed 26 Indian citizens, including women and children.
In retaliation, India launched Operation Sindoor, a precision military strike targeting nine terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation was carried out with advanced drones and minimal collateral damage, as confirmed by Wing Commander Vyomika Singh.
Increased security alerts, mass gatherings advisories, and canceled public events in metros like Delhi and Mumbai led the producers to reconsider a cinema-first strategy.
Press previews and promotional events for Bhool Chuk Maaf, originally scheduled for Delhi and Mumbai, have also been canceled in the wake of heightened national security concerns.
Publicists from Maddock Films confirmed that all remaining marketing efforts will now be digital-first, with online interviews, behind-the-scenes clips, and fan Q&A sessions planned in the days leading to the Prime Video launch.
Bhool Chuk Maaf is not the first film to opt out of a theatrical release due to unforeseen socio-political circumstances. Similar trends were observed during the COVID-19 pandemic, where OTT platforms emerged as the primary mode of film distribution.
Analysts suggest that while Bhool Chuk Maaf’s content aligns well with home viewing audiences, the OTT shift also reflects a cautious move by producers to avoid commercial risks amidst instability.
“Family-oriented content like this often performs better with wider, relaxed viewership rather than risking footfalls during high-alert periods,” said a Mumbai-based trade analyst.
The shift to Prime Video was met with mixed reactions. While many praised the producers’ patriotic sentiment, others expressed disappointment about missing the theatrical experience, especially given the film’s Varanasi-based visual aesthetics.
Film critic Anupama Mehra commented:
“Rajkummar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi are among the finest performers of their generation. This film has the potential to create lasting digital impact.”
Both leads have earned critical acclaim in recent years:
Rajkummar Rao has consistently delivered standout performances in films like Newton, Stree, and Monica, O My Darling.
Wamiqa Gabbi, fresh off her success in OTT series like Jubilee and Charlie Chopra, is becoming a preferred face in content-driven cinema.
Their pairing in a genre-blending film like Bhool Chuk Maaf is expected to draw a wide digital audience, particularly among millennials and Gen Z.
A humorous and emotional story rooted in Indian traditions and family dynamics
A time loop twist rarely explored in Bollywood
A Varanasi backdrop, offering spiritual depth and visual richness
Strong supporting performances from acclaimed character actors
With a runtime of approximately 2 hours, the film aims to deliver an engaging weekend watch that appeals to both urban and rural viewers.
While Bhool Chuk Maaf may have taken a detour from theaters, its OTT release positions it for massive digital reach. The blend of timely storytelling, stellar performances, and the producers’ sensitivity to national sentiment make this a noteworthy cinematic moment.
