KKN Gurugram Desk | A honeymoon trip to Meghalaya turned into a nightmare for an Indore couple when the husband was found dead under mysterious circumstances and the wife remains missing. The incident has left authorities and families grappling with unanswered questions. After an extensive search operation that lasted days, the body of the husband was discovered, but the wife’s whereabouts remain unknown, adding to the intrigue of this shocking case.
On May 11, 2025, Raja Raghuvanshi, a transport businessman from Indore, married Sonam, and their marriage was arranged with the consent of both families. Just nine days after their wedding, they decided to go for a honeymoon to Meghalaya. They began their journey on May 20 and, after visiting the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati, made their way to Shillong on May 22. However, only 48 hours after reaching Shillong, the couple mysteriously disappeared.
Raja and Sonam were supposed to enjoy their honeymoon, but things took a dark turn when their phones were switched off. Their families grew worried and began searching for them, but their phones continued to remain inaccessible. After several days without communication, the couple’s brothers arrived in Shillong to report their disappearance, and police launched a search operation.
The couple had checked into a place called Shipara Homestay in the Mawlahkiat area of Shillong, a scenic area known for its lush greenery. According to their last known communication, Sonam spoke to her mother-in-law on May 23, stating that they were trekking through a jungle and might have seen a waterfall. However, shortly after the call, both of their phones were turned off, and all attempts to reach them failed.
Their families initially thought it might be a network issue, but when the phones remained switched off for two more days, the concern grew significantly. On May 26, Raja and Sonam’s brothers arrived in Shillong and filed a missing person’s report with the local police. They had also received photos from the couple’s last day in Shillong, which included images of a rented Activa scooter. The scooter was traced to a local rental shop, and police learned that Raja had rented the scooter on May 23.
As the search continued, the police found a major clue: an abandoned scooter in a parking area at Osra Hills, about 25 kilometers from Mawlahkiat. The scooter was the same one Raja had rented earlier. This discovery led the authorities to search the area further, but the whereabouts of Raja and Sonam remained unclear.
On June 2, after 10 days of searching, a breakthrough came when a body was found in a deep gorge near Vizardong Park, approximately 25 kilometers away from where the scooter had been found. The body was immediately sent to a local hospital for identification. Upon closer inspection, it was identified as Raja’s due to a tattoo on his arm, which was his name, confirming the tragic discovery.
A further investigation revealed Raja’s belongings were missing—his wallet, gold chain, diamond ring, and power bank were gone, which led police to suspect robbery or foul play.
Despite the discovery of Raja’s body, Sonam remains untraceable, adding layers of complexity to the case. The last known location of the couple was near the Osra Hills area, but even after extensive searching, no evidence or sign of Sonam has been found.
The Shillong police are now focusing their efforts on locating Sonam. Authorities have yet to determine if she too has fallen victim to foul play or if she is still missing under different circumstances. The circumstances surrounding Raja’s death remain suspicious, especially with the missing valuables and the lack of any signs of struggle at the Shipara Homestay.
The police are investigating the possibility that local gangs in the area could have been involved, as it is known that Osra Hills has several criminal activities. According to police sources, there have been reports of local gang members having access to the area where the couple was last seen. The missing valuables, including a gold chain, diamond ring, and bracelet, could suggest a robbery gone wrong.
Additionally, Sonam’s disappearance is also puzzling—did she become a target of the same criminals, or was there something more to this case? It is still unclear whether Sonam’s disappearance is linked to Raja’s death, or if she is simply another victim of a tragic set of circumstances.
The search for Sonam has been hindered by the difficult terrain, dense forests, and the steep hills of Meghalaya. The police have been working tirelessly, deploying various methods, including drone surveillance and canine units, to track Sonam’s whereabouts.
Despite the challenges, the police have not given up, and special investigation teams (SIT) have been formed to focus on the case. However, after 14 days of searching, there is still no sign of Sonam, leading to growing fears that time is running out.
As the investigation continues, several unanswered questions remain:
What led to Raja’s tragic death, and why was he targeted?
Why is Sonam still missing, and is she connected to Raja’s murder?
Were local gangs involved, and is this case a result of a robbery?
What will the postmortem report reveal about Raja’s cause of death?
The Shillong police have assured that they are doing everything they can to locate Sonam and solve the case. Meanwhile, Raja’s family and the public await answers.
The disappearance of a young married couple on their honeymoon is a tragedy that has shocked not only their families but also the entire community. The sudden and mysterious circumstances surrounding their trip to Meghalaya have left many questioning the safety of tourist destinations and the security of travelers in remote regions. This case also raises concerns about the presence of criminal gangs targeting tourists and the effectiveness of local law enforcement in preventing such incidents.
The case of Raja Raghuvanshi and Sonam’s mysterious disappearance continues to unfold, with authorities committed to uncovering the truth. While the discovery of Raja’s body has brought some clarity, Sonam’s fate remains unknown, and the investigation is ongoing.
This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the dangers that can lurk even in seemingly peaceful tourist destinations. It also underscores the need for better security measures, improved law enforcement presence, and greater awareness of potential risks, especially for travelers in remote areas.
