Young Doctor Dies by Suicide in Muzaffarpur: Used Licensed Gun

Published on

A tragic incident has been reported from Muzaffarpur, Bihar, where a young doctor took his own life using his father’s licensed double-barrel gun. The incident took place in Jaitpur Estate Colony under Kazi Mohammadpur police station area on Friday evening. The doctor, identified as 25-year-old Ashutosh Chandra, reportedly shot himself in the head while inside his study room on the third floor of his residence. Police officials confirmed that the doctor was under stress after failing to clear his postgraduate entrance examination.

Incident at Jaitpur Estate Colony

According to preliminary information, the suicide occurred around 7:15 pm when Ashutosh returned home from duty at a private hospital located on Juran Chapra Road. After arriving at his residence, he shared a light meal with his mother and grandmother. Soon after, he went to his study room to read, but minutes later, the sound of a gunshot shook the house.

Police and forensic teams arrived at the scene shortly after being alerted. The doctor’s body was found lying on the floor beneath his bed, while the licensed gun was recovered from the bed. Blood was scattered across the room, and a tablet and books were found open near the spot. His mobile phone kept ringing during the investigation.

Background of the Deceased

Ashutosh Chandra was the only son of his parents and a resident of Harishankar Maniyari. He had completed his MBBS degree from a medical college in Agra. Recently, he was appointed to a private hospital in Muzaffarpur, marking his first job after graduation. His father, Avinash Chandra, runs petrol pumps in Kanti and Deghra.

Ashutosh was unmarried and lived with his family. He had two sisters, one of whom is married while the other is a doctor as well. His family had high hopes pinned on his career, and the recent result of the postgraduate medical examination came as a major setback for him. He was reportedly deeply disturbed after not clearing the test held eight to ten days earlier.

Statements from Police

ASP (Town) Suresh Kumar stated that stress due to academic failure appears to be the primary reason behind the suicide. According to him, the absence of a suicide note leaves some questions unanswered, but all signs point towards mental distress as the trigger. The forensic science team has collected evidence from the room, including the firearm, tablet and mobile phone. These items have been sent for further analysis.

Police officers also revealed that the gun used in the suicide was due for inspection at the police station on Saturday, in connection with upcoming elections. The weapon has now been seized as part of the investigation.

The Final Moments

Family members recalled that Ashutosh seemed normal when he returned from work on Friday evening. After having snacks with his mother and grandmother, he went upstairs to his study room as usual. Moments later, they heard a loud noise and rushed to the room, only to find him lifeless. At the time of the incident, his father was away managing the family’s petrol pumps.

No suicide note was discovered at the site, and police are relying on forensic evidence and statements from family members to reconstruct the sequence of events.

The Hospital Connection

Ashutosh had joined the private hospital in Muzaffarpur only a week earlier. This was his first professional assignment after completing medical school. Colleagues at the hospital expressed shock over his sudden demise, describing him as hardworking and dedicated.

The stress of failing the postgraduate examination, however, seemed to weigh heavily on him. According to family sources, he had been withdrawn since the result was announced and spoke less with friends and relatives.

Impact on Family

The death has left the family shattered. Relatives and neighbors described Ashutosh as bright, humble and promising. His father, Avinash Chandra, who manages petrol pumps in Kanti and Deghra, was devastated after receiving the news. The presence of his two sisters, one married and one pursuing her medical career, brought some emotional support, but the shock remains overwhelming.

The police have handed over the body to the family after completing the postmortem examination. Funeral rituals are expected to be conducted in the family’s native village.

Mental Health Under Pressure

The case has once again highlighted the immense stress faced by young professionals in the medical field. The pressure to perform in competitive exams such as postgraduate medical entrance tests often creates unbearable anxiety. In many cases, candidates find it difficult to cope with repeated failures.

Experts stress that greater awareness about mental health and support systems for young doctors is urgently needed. Counseling and stress management should be integrated into academic environments to prevent such tragedies.

Police Investigation

The Kazi Mohammadpur police have registered the case as an unnatural death. Officers confirmed that the firearm, which belonged to the victim’s father, was duly licensed. Forensic experts will prepare a detailed report to confirm whether the gunshot was self-inflicted, though initial evidence strongly suggests suicide.

The investigation also aims to determine if there were any external pressures apart from academic stress. Ashutosh’s electronic devices are expected to provide more clarity once examined.

The suicide of Dr. Ashutosh Chandra in Muzaffarpur has raised concerns over the rising mental stress among medical students and professionals. At just 25, he had begun his career with hope and ambition, but the pressure of failing a postgraduate examination became overwhelming. The use of his father’s licensed gun underscores the tragic outcome of unchecked stress.

Authorities are investigating the case, while the family mourns the loss of their only son. The incident highlights the urgent need to prioritize mental health, especially for young professionals working under competitive pressure.
