KKN Gurugram Desk | The Central Government has approved ₹75 crore for making Muzaffarpur a garbage-free city under Smart Cities 2.0 initiative. This project aims to promote environmentally sustainable urban development and is set to begin within the next six months. By 2026, Muzaffarpur will have a new and improved waste management system, ensuring a clean and green environment.

The Muzaffarpur Municipal Corporation (MMC) will contribute ₹18.75 crore from its internal sources, while an additional ₹16 crore will come from the Swachh Bharat Mission. The announcement was made by Municipal Commissioner Vikram Virkar during a press conference after attending a workshop on Cities 2.0 in Ahmedabad.

Smart Cities 2.0: Muzaffarpur’s Green & Clean Transformation

Muzaffarpur’s inclusion in Smart Cities 2.0 aligns with the Central Government’s vision of developing green and clean cities across India.

✅ Project Start Date: Within the next six months
✅ Expected Completion: 2026
✅ Total Budget: ₹75 crore sanctioned by Central Government
✅ Additional Funds:

  • ₹18.75 crore from Muzaffarpur Municipal Corporation (MMC)
  • ₹16 crore from Swachh Bharat Mission

This initiative will not only improve waste management but also transform the city’s landscape, making it environmentally friendly and aesthetically appealing.

Initial Proposal of ₹135 Crore, Reduced Allocation Based on Population

Municipal Commissioner Vikram Virkar stated that the initial proposal for Muzaffarpur was ₹135 crore. However, since the city’s population is between 4-5 lakh, the sanctioned amount was reduced to ₹75 crore.

Despite this, officials believe that with the support of public representatives and citizens, the project will be successfully implemented within the allocated budget. The project is expected to significantly improve Muzaffarpur’s waste management system, ensuring that the city aligns with the Clean India initiative.

Transforming Rautania Dumping Yard into a Green Zone

One of the key highlights of this project is the revamping of the Rautania dumping site.

🚮 Current Situation: The area is covered in mountains of garbage.
🌳 Future Plan: The project aims to convert it into a lush green area.

Municipal Commissioner Vikram Virkar expressed confidence that soon, the site will be so well-maintained that people will visit and take selfies in the greenery. This transformation is part of the larger vision to enhance Muzaffarpur’s environmental appeal.

Selection of Project Management Consultant (PMC) in Three Months

For the successful execution of this project, the Municipal Corporation will:

✔ Hire a Project Management Consultant (PMC) with expertise in national and international-level urban projects.
✔ Recruit two environmental specialists on a contractual basis to oversee environmental issues.
✔ Select an agency to analyze the type and quantity of waste generated in Muzaffarpur.

The selected agency will submit a detailed waste analysis report within three months, which will be used to develop the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and finalize the PMC for implementation.

How Muzaffarpur Will Benefit from the Clean City Initiative?

The waste management project will significantly improve Muzaffarpur’s environmental conditions by:

🚯 Reducing Waste Accumulation – A structured waste collection and processing system will be established.
🌍 Creating a Cleaner Environment – Dumping yards will be converted into green zones.
🏗 Urban Infrastructure Development – The city’s cleanliness will attract investors and boost real estate.
💼 Employment Generation – New projects will create job opportunities for locals.
📈 Improved Public Health – Better waste management will reduce pollution and health hazards.

With ₹75 crore sanctioned by the Central Government, Muzaffarpur is set to witness a major transformation in waste management.

Key Takeaways from PM Modi’s Gift to Muzaffarpur:

🔹 Muzaffarpur to get a modern waste management system by 2026.

🔹 Smart Cities 2.0 will bring new development projects to Muzaffarpur.
