KKN Gurugram Desk | In a late-night police operation on Thursday, a wanted criminal involved in multiple murder cases was injured in a police encounter in the Baramatpur area of Muzaffarpur’s Sadar police station jurisdiction. The accused, identified as Lalbabu Rai, sustained a bullet injury in his leg and is currently being treated under police custody at SKMCH (Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital).
The shootout took place when the police attempted to apprehend Lalbabu and his associates, who were allegedly planning a major criminal activity in the area.
Gunfight in Baramatpur: What Happened?
According to official reports, the encounter occurred around midnight near a mango orchard in Baramatpur. Acting on a confidential intelligence input, Sadar police station in-charge Asmit Kumar led a special team to the location, where a group of criminals was reportedly plotting a violent incident.
As soon as the police approached the spot, the suspects opened fire on the security team. In retaliation, the police returned fire, during which Lalbabu Rai was hit in the leg. He was immediately taken into custody and shifted to SKMCH for treatment.
Other members of the criminal group fled under the cover of darkness, and police operations to trace and arrest them are currently underway.
One Pistol Recovered from the Scene
During the preliminary investigation at the encounter site, a pistol was recovered. Senior officials believe that more weapons may be hidden in the area, but due to poor visibility at night, a thorough search will resume in daylight.
Forensic experts and crime scene investigators have also been deployed to examine the area for ballistic evidence and to reconstruct the sequence of events.
Who is Lalbabu Rai? A History of Violence
Police confirmed that Lalbabu Rai is a history-sheeter from Saraiya Manikpur and has been involved in several high-profile murder cases in recent months.
Key criminal links include:
-
Sanjay Kumar Chaudhary (alias Ramnavmi Chaudhary): A local political figure and the husband of a Panchayat Samiti member. He was shot dead last month in the Patahi area. Lalbabu is believed to be the main shooter in that incident.
-
Ram Kishore Chaudhary (alias Tuntun Chaudhary): A property dealer and cousin of Sanjay Chaudhary, who was also shot dead two months prior—allegedly by Lalbabu and his gang.
Both victims belonged to the same family and were murdered in a similar manner, suggesting a planned and targeted killing spree. Lalbabu is suspected to have played the role of shooter in both cases, police say.
Senior officers believe that Lalbabu is also linked to other violent crimes, including extortion, land disputes, and gang activities in the Muzaffarpur and Saraiya belt.
Police Statement on the Encounter
Speaking to the media, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sushil Kumar confirmed the details of the shootout. He stated:
“Our police team was acting on specific intelligence that a notorious gang, including Lalbabu Rai, was plotting a violent incident in Baramatpur. As our personnel approached the location, the criminals opened fire. In self-defense, our officers retaliated. One criminal sustained injuries and has been taken into custody. The rest escaped. Investigations are ongoing.”
The SSP added that Lalbabu had been on the radar of Muzaffarpur police for his involvement in multiple murders, and a manhunt is underway to nab his absconding associates.
Medical Condition of the Accused
Lalbabu was brought to Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital late Thursday night. According to medical staff, he suffered a gunshot wound in his lower leg, and his condition is stable.
He remains under tight police security, and a judicial process will follow after medical clearance.
Meanwhile, a case has been registered under multiple IPC sections, including attempt to murder, assault on public servant, and arms act violations.
Criminal Nexus and Ongoing Investigation
Authorities suspect that Lalbabu was not acting alone. Intelligence suggests that his gang may be involved in contract killings, land mafia activities, and possibly political targeting. The weapons used, the timing of the murders, and the targets—all point toward organized crime with possible external backing.
Police are now:
-
Analyzing mobile data and call records of the accused.
-
Cross-verifying witness statements from earlier murder investigations.
-
Reviewing CCTV footage from nearby locations.
-
Expanding raids to arrest other gang members who fled the encounter site.
However, community leaders have urged the administration to enhance night patrolling and install CCTV cameras in crime-prone zones.
Muzaffarpur Crime Watch: A Growing Concern
Muzaffarpur, once considered relatively peaceful, has recently witnessed a spike in organized crime—including land disputes, extortion rackets, and political violence. The arrest of Lalbabu Rai is seen as a breakthrough in tackling gang-linked murders that had rattled local communities.
Police officials assure that special task forces are being deployed to crack down on repeat offenders and dismantle criminal networks operating in and around north Bihar.
The Muzaffarpur police encounter that led to the arrest of notorious criminal Lalbabu Rai marks a critical step in the fight against organized crime in Bihar. With his capture, authorities hope to unlock more details about a wider criminal network, potentially preventing future violent incidents.
