KKN Gurugram Desk | A major road accident shook Bihar’s Buxar district late Friday night as a speeding Scorpio SUV lost control and fell into the Ganga River after smashing through the safety railing of the Veer Kunwar Singh Setu, a key bridge connecting Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The tragic incident has raised serious concerns about road safety and structural maintenance on crucial interstate routes.
According to official reports, the Scorpio was en route from Ballia, Uttar Pradesh to Buxar, Bihar. The accident occurred at around 10:30 PM on June 20, when the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle while crossing the old Ganga bridge, also known as Veer Kunwar Singh Setu.
The SUV crashed through the bridge railing and plummeted into the Ganga River, triggering panic among commuters and local residents. Eyewitnesses said the vehicle was moving at high speed when it veered sharply before hitting the edge of the bridge.
There were reportedly four people inside the Scorpio, all believed to be residents of Dulhpur village under Simri block in Buxar district. Their current whereabouts remain unknown, though officials fear they may have drowned.
As soon as the accident was reported, the district administration launched an urgent search and rescue operation. Divers were deployed into the river, and boats were used to create a dragnet to trace the bodies or the submerged vehicle. The administration also deployed cranes to extract the Scorpio from the riverbed.
The rescue efforts continued through the night and into Saturday morning, but as of now, no bodies have been recovered.
The news of the accident spread quickly, drawing hundreds of locals to the accident site. Onlookers, family members, and curious residents from surrounding areas rushed to the bridge, hoping for updates and praying for a miracle.
Due to the massive crowd, police had to set up barricades and manage traffic, ensuring that rescue operations were not hampered.
Senior district officials and police personnel remained present at the scene throughout the night, overseeing the rescue mission and updating families of the missing victims.
“We believe the Scorpio had four occupants, all coming from Ballia. Their families have been informed, and a search operation is underway with divers and rescue boats. Confirmation of deaths can only be made once the bodies are recovered.”
The police added that identification of the victims and determining the exact cause of the crash will be possible only after the vehicle is retrieved and further investigation is conducted.
The district administration has taken swift action, deploying a team of professional divers and rescue workers. A heavy-duty crane was called in to extract the vehicle from the deep waters of the Ganga. However, due to strong currents and nighttime conditions, the efforts faced significant challenges.
The Ganga River in this region is known for turbulent undercurrents, especially during the monsoon onset in June, which makes rescue operations dangerous and slow.
As per sources, the administration issued a flash alert to the residents of Dulhpur village regarding the possible involvement of locals in the fatal incident. The village is in mourning, with families and neighbors holding prayer meetings and anxiously awaiting any news.
Villagers have begun assembling at the banks of the Ganga near Buxar, hoping to catch a glimpse of rescue outcomes.
The incident has sparked a larger debate on the condition of Veer Kunwar Singh Setu, an important lifeline for commuters and transporters moving between Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia and Bihar’s Buxar.
While authorities haven’t yet confirmed whether bridge infrastructure failure contributed to the accident, locals claim that the old bridge has long lacked adequate safety reinforcements. Additionally, lack of speed limit enforcement and poor lighting on the bridge have made it a danger zone, especially at night.
This is not the first time such an accident has occurred on this stretch, highlighting the urgent need for safety audits and infrastructure upgrades.
An eyewitness, who was driving a motorcycle behind the Scorpio, told KKNLive:
“The SUV was moving too fast. Suddenly, it swerved and hit the railing. Before anyone could react, it just went over. It was horrifying to watch.”
Another bystander added that while the new lane on the bridge is still under construction, the old section is used for most night traffic. Many parts of the railing, he claimed, are already damaged or loose, making them insufficient to stop an out-of-control vehicle.
The Buxar Ganga bridge accident serves as a grim reminder of the growing concerns around road safety, speeding, and aging infrastructure in India. As rescue efforts continue, the focus now shifts to preventive measures and accountability for ensuring such tragedies do not repeat.
Whether it’s enforcing speed limits, conducting regular structural assessments of critical bridges, or installing modern crash barriers — such steps are no longer optional but urgently necessary.
