Bihar continues to face fluctuating weather conditions as the monsoon remains sluggish across most parts of the state. While many districts experienced a noticeable rise in temperature on Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Sunday, warning of possible thunderstorms, lightning, and light rainfall in specific regions.

Temperature Surge Across Bihar

Saturday marked a significant spike in daytime temperatures across all districts in Bihar. The highest temperature was recorded in Motihari, where the mercury soared to 37.8 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest location in the state. Several other districts, including Patna, Buxar, Bhojpur, Saran, Darbhanga, Purnia, Munger, and surrounding areas, also reported maximum temperatures crossing 35°C.

According to IMD data, these high temperatures can be attributed to reduced monsoon activity and prolonged dry spells, especially in the past few days.

IMD Patna Issues Yellow Alert

The IMD center in Patna has sounded a yellow weather alert for Sunday, July 14, across several districts including Siwan, Nawada, Sheikhpura, Lakhisarai, and Jamui. The department predicts possible lightning strikes (thunderbolt), mild thunderstorms, and light showers in isolated regions.

This alert is particularly crucial for residents and farmers, as lightning-related incidents are common during unstable weather periods in Bihar. The alert is valid for the next three hours but could be extended based on updated satellite and radar inputs.

Residents are advised to stay indoors during storms and avoid open fields during lightning warnings.

Monsoon Progress in Bihar: When Will It Pick Up?

Despite the arrival of the Southwest Monsoon in June, its activity has been below average this July, especially in central and southern parts of Bihar. The weather in Koshi and Seemanchal regions is expected to remain relatively stable over the next few days.

However, a fresh spell of moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to return around July 15, particularly in Jamui and Nawada, where the IMD has predicted potential heavy rainfall.

As per the forecast released by Bihar Agricultural University, monsoon activity is expected to remain weak between July 13 and July 16, especially in southern Bihar. Only isolated showers are likely in areas such as Gaya, Aurangabad, and Rohtas, offering minimal relief to farmers who depend on rainfall for sowing Kharif crops like paddy.

District-Wise Temperature Snapshot (Saturday, July 12)

District Max Temp (°C) Min Temp (°C)
Motihari 37.8 Not reported
Bhagalpur 34.2 26.8
Patna 35+ Not reported
Buxar 35+ Not reported
Purnia 35+ Not reported
Munger 35+ Not reported

These figures reflect a broader pattern of rising temperatures due to the lack of consistent rainfall across the state.

Impact on Agriculture and Daily Life

The weak monsoon is beginning to affect agricultural planning and daily life. Farmers are now delaying sowing activities, especially in rain-dependent regions. The ongoing dry spell also increases the risk of heat-related health issues, particularly among outdoor laborers, the elderly, and children.

In urban areas like Patna and Muzaffarpur, rising temperatures have led to increased electricity consumption due to higher usage of fans, coolers, and air conditioning units. Power companies are now facing added pressure to maintain uninterrupted supply during peak hours.

Expert View: What Lies Ahead?

Meteorologists suggest that this temporary lull in monsoon may be linked to shifting low-pressure systems in the Bay of Bengal, which often influence rainfall patterns in eastern India.

“Monsoon activity is expected to pick up again after July 15,” said a senior IMD official based in Patna. “We are monitoring the development of a fresh weather system that could bring moderate to heavy rainfall in central and northern Bihar by next week.”

Until then, people in Bihar must brace for more hot and humid days, especially in districts like East Champaran, Bhojpur, and Darbhanga, where temperatures are already on the rise.

Precautionary Measures Recommended by IMD

  • Avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours.

  • Stay updated with IMD alerts via weather apps or local news.

  • Farmers should delay irrigation and sowing if rainfall remains low.

  • Take precautions during lightning warnings—seek shelter and avoid open fields or water bodies.

As Bihar weather continues to fluctuate with rising heat and delayed monsoon, residents are urged to remain cautious and plan their activities accordingly. The next few days will be crucial for both rural and urban areas as they wait for the monsoon to regain strength. The IMD alert is a timely reminder of the unpredictable nature of Indian summers and the need for proactive preparedness.
