Bihar Weather Update: Heavy Rainfall Predicted in Several Districts, IMD Issues Alert

Published on

The weather in Bihar has once again shifted suddenly, bringing relief from heat but also concerns of waterlogging and thunderstorms. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued fresh alerts for heavy rainfall across multiple districts. Cities like Patna, Aurangabad, and Bhojpur have already experienced downpours, and forecasts indicate more showers in the coming days.

Sudden Change in Bihar Weather

On Tuesday, the weather in Bihar changed drastically after noon. The day began with strong sunshine across many districts, but by afternoon heavy showers lashed several regions. Patna witnessed continuous rainfall for nearly three hours. Residents welcomed the relief from the scorching heat, yet waterlogging created traffic disruptions in many parts of the city.

Aurangabad and Bhojpur were placed under red alert due to heavy rain. Jehanabad and Gopalganj also reported similar weather conditions, with unexpected showers cooling down the temperature. The municipal staff in Patna worked swiftly to manage clogged drains and control water accumulation in the streets.

IMD Bihar Weather Forecast

According to the IMD Patna center, this sudden change in weather is expected to continue for the next few days. The department has issued a heavy rainfall alert and also warned citizens about the possibility of lightning strikes. People have been advised to remain cautious during outdoor activities, especially in open areas.

Today’s Weather Prediction for Bihar

On September 24, Bihar’s weather is expected to remain mixed. Some districts will see heavy rainfall, while others may experience intervals of sunshine. As per the forecast, heavy rain is likely in Kaimur, Rohtas, Aurangabad, Gaya, Supaul, Araria, and Kishanganj. Southern Bihar districts and Seemanchal region, including Patna, are expected to witness moderate to heavy showers.

In contrast, northern districts of Bihar may receive only light rainfall. Currently, skies remain cloudy across the state. The maximum daytime temperature is predicted to stay between 34°C and 36°C.

Rainfall Brings Relief and Challenges

The showers have given residents a break from the sweltering September heat. However, the downpour has also triggered challenges in many areas. Waterlogging in Patna and other cities caused difficulties for commuters. In some neighborhoods, drainage systems struggled to cope with the sudden inflow of rainwater. Despite these issues, the dip in temperature has been welcomed by locals.

Why Bihar Weather Changed Suddenly

While monsoon is retreating from several parts of India, Bihar continues to receive rainfall. Weather experts point to the formation of a low-pressure area near the Myanmar-Bangladesh coast in the Bay of Bengal. This system is likely to strengthen around September 25. If the system intensifies, Bihar’s weather will be directly impacted, bringing more rain in the coming days.

This phenomenon is delaying the monsoon withdrawal from Bihar, which usually begins by late September. As a result, showers may continue in the state even in the last week of the month.

Monsoon Withdrawal Updates in India

In the next 24 hours, favorable conditions are developing for the withdrawal of southwest monsoon from several regions. Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab are expected to witness the retreat of monsoon. Similar conditions are forming in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir.

For Bihar, however, the withdrawal is likely to be delayed. This delay is beneficial for the state’s agriculture, as rainfall at this time helps farmers with paddy cultivation and other seasonal crops. Still, excessive rain may create challenges in flood-prone districts.

Bihar Weather Alert for Key Districts

The IMD has specifically warned residents of Kaimur, Rohtas, Aurangabad, Gaya, Supaul, Araria, and Kishanganj. These districts are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. Patna, along with other southern and Seemanchal districts, is also on alert. Northern districts may receive only light rain, but thunderstorms and lightning remain a risk.

The department has urged citizens to remain indoors during storms and avoid open fields or tall structures during lightning alerts. Farmers have also been advised to take precautions while working in fields.

Temperature and Air Quality in Major Cities

Despite rainfall, temperatures in Bihar remain relatively high. Maximum temperatures are hovering around 32°C to 35°C across several districts. Minimum temperatures are ranging between 26°C and 29°C.

The air quality index (AQI) remains moderate in most cities. Patna recorded an AQI of 98, while Muzaffarpur reported 83. Gaya’s AQI stood at 29, indicating good air quality due to recent rains. Purnia registered 84, and Bhagalpur recorded 73.

Here is a summary of weather conditions in key cities:

  • Patna: Maximum 33.9°C, Minimum 28.8°C, AQI 98

  • Muzaffarpur: Maximum 33.2°C, Minimum 28.5°C, AQI 83

  • Gaya: Maximum 32°C, Minimum 26.5°C, AQI 29

  • Purnia: Maximum 35°C, Minimum 26.7°C, AQI 84

  • Bhagalpur: Maximum 33.6°C, Minimum 28°C, AQI 73

Impact on Daily Life in Bihar

The weather shift has affected daily life across Bihar. Schools and colleges in certain districts reported lower attendance due to heavy showers. Road traffic in Patna slowed down as vehicles navigated waterlogged streets. In rural areas, farmers welcomed the rain, but many remain cautious about potential damage to standing crops if the downpour continues for long.

Electricity supply in some districts was interrupted during thunderstorms. However, authorities assured that restoration work was carried out swiftly. Emergency teams were also on alert to respond to incidents caused by lightning.

Seasonal Festivals and Bihar Weather

The ongoing Navratri celebrations in Bihar are also being influenced by the changing weather. With Durga Puja around the corner, organizers are concerned about heavy rain disrupting festivities. Temporary structures and pandals in Patna, Gaya, and Bhagalpur are being reinforced to withstand showers.

The IMD has clarified that while rainfall will continue in several districts, clear skies may be seen in parts of north Bihar. This mixed weather pattern means festival organizers must stay prepared for sudden showers.

What to Expect in Coming Days

Bihar’s weather in the next few days will depend largely on the low-pressure system forming in the Bay of Bengal. If it intensifies, rainfall may increase across multiple districts. The IMD has predicted more showers in south and east Bihar, while north Bihar may see light rain or sunshine at intervals.

The maximum temperature is expected to remain in the mid-30s, while minimum temperatures will stay around 26°C to 28°C. Skies are likely to remain partly cloudy, keeping humidity levels high.

With the retreat of southwest monsoon already underway in other states, Bihar continues to remain under the influence of monsoon systems. Experts believe that the delay in withdrawal will ensure sufficient rainfall in the last week of September. This will benefit paddy cultivation but could also raise concerns of localized flooding in low-lying areas.

Residents are advised to keep monitoring updates from the IMD and local authorities. Safety during thunderstorms is crucial, as Bihar often reports lightning-related incidents during this season.
