KKN Gurugram Desk |  The weather in Bihar is poised for a dramatic shift over the weekend as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light rainfall in parts of the state, including the capital Patna on Saturday. However, Sunday is expected to bring extreme heat to several northern districts, with a heatwave alert issued for eight regions.

According to the IMD, while partly cloudy skies and brief rain showers may offer some temporary respite on Saturday, the mercury will continue to rise. The department has warned of a sharp increase in maximum and minimum temperatures across various parts of the state.

Heatwave Set to Sweep North Bihar on Sunday

The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for eight districts in North Bihar, predicting severe heatwave conditions on Sunday, May 11:

  • West Champaran

  • East Champaran

  • Sitamarhi

  • Sheohar

  • Nawada

  • Jamui

  • Banka

  • Madhubani

These districts are likely to experience dry, hot winds and daytime temperatures soaring 3–5°C above normal, making it potentially hazardous for vulnerable populations such as children, elderly people, and outdoor workers.

Patna Weather Forecast: Clouds and Rain Expected

Saturday’s forecast for Patna indicates partly cloudy skies with a chance of light rain accompanied by thunder and lightning, especially by evening. During the day, clear skies and harsh sunlight are expected to push the mercury higher, though the rain might bring some evening relief.

On Friday, Patna recorded a maximum temperature of 39.1°C, a modest increase of 0.8°C compared to the previous day. However, humidity levels at 39% made conditions feel even more uncomfortable. The combination of heat and humidity created an oppressive environment for residents.

Rising Temperatures Across Bihar: Over 40°C in Four Cities

In the past 24 hours, many parts of Bihar recorded extreme temperatures, with four cities surpassing the 40°C mark. The situation is especially alarming in areas with limited access to cooling infrastructure.

City-wise Temperature Report (Friday, May 9, 2025):

  • Gopalganj: 41.6°C

  • Valmikinagar (West Champaran): 41.2°C

  • Gaya: 40.8°C

  • Khagaria: 40.7°C

These temperatures signify an early onset of summer severity, with May heat reaching peak levels.

Light Rainfall Recorded in Southern Districts

Despite the dominant heat, some districts witnessed isolated rainfall over the past 24 hours. According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, light rain was reported in:

  • Araria

  • Begusarai

  • Aurangabad

  • Rohtas

  • Buxar

  • Kaimur

In Aurangabad, winds blew at a speed of 41 km/h, adding to the dynamic weather pattern in the region.

Health Advisory for Bihar Residents

With rising temperatures and a heatwave imminent, the state health department urges residents to:

  • Stay hydrated throughout the day

  • Avoid direct sun exposure between 12 PM and 4 PM

  • Use protective gear such as caps, sunglasses, and cotton clothing

  • Seek cool shelters during peak heat hours

  • Look out for symptoms of heatstroke like dizziness, vomiting, or fainting

Special advisories have also been issued for farmers, construction workers, and delivery personnel to take frequent breaks and prioritize hydration.

In a major development, the IMD is now leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) for improved weather predictions in Bihar. This new system is designed to provide advanced warnings for thunderstorms and cyclones up to 10 days in advance.

This technology is expected to enhance disaster preparedness and ensure timely alerts for farming communities and government agencies.
