Bihar Weather Alert: IMD Warns of Severe Rain, Lightning Threat in 38 Districts

Published on

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rainfall alert across Bihar, warning of intense showers and lightning strikes in 38 districts. The state is bracing for widespread monsoon-related disruptions, with several rivers showing rising water levels. Patna, Gaya, Purnia, and other key cities are expected to be hit hard.

Monsoon Turns Fierce in Bihar

Monsoon rains, once welcomed as relief, have now turned threatening. After moderate rainfall on July 15, the situation is worsening. On Wednesday, Bihar is likely to face severe to very severe rain. The intensity will be the highest so far this season. IMD forecasts point to dangerous weather conditions, including thunderstorm activity across the state.

This is the first time this monsoon that Bihar will see intense, continuous rainfall. Such a heavy downpour increases the risk of urban flooding, lightning injuries, and agriculture damage.

People Urged to Stay Indoors

Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors. Those living near riverbanks or in flood-prone areas should remain on high alert. Lightning poses a serious risk, especially in open fields and farmlands. People are advised to shut windows and doors and avoid unnecessary travel. Stepping out during such conditions may risk lives.

Cities Likely to See Rainfall and Thunder

The following temperature and AQI levels were recorded across major cities:

City Max/Min Temperature (°C) AQI
Patna 31.8 / 25.4 67
Muzaffarpur 31.0 / 24.1 48
Bhagalpur 28.3 / 25.2 42
Gaya 27.9 / 24.6 45
Purnia 30.2 / 25.7 38

These figures reflect data available up to Tuesday. Air quality remains moderately good due to the rain.

District-Wise Rain Forecast in Bihar

According to IMD, the following districts are under a heavy rainfall warning:

  • Very Heavy Rainfall: Rohtas and Kaimur.

  • Heavy Rainfall: Buxar, Aurangabad, Arwal, Jehanabad, Nalanda, Sheikhpura, Lakhisarai, Jamui, and Banka.

  • Rainfall Expected: Patna, Gaya, Purnia, West Champaran, East Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, and Saran.

In total, all 38 districts in Bihar are likely to receive rainfall on Wednesday.

Orange Alert for Lightning

There is a high probability of lightning strikes in:

  • Bhojpur

  • Buxar

  • Kaimur

  • Rohtas

  • Aurangabad

  • Arwal

Due to this, the IMD has issued an Orange Alert. Residents, especially farmers, are being warned not to work in open fields. If the weather worsens, they should immediately seek shelter in permanent structures.

Rivers Rising Across Bihar

Heavy rainfall across Bihar and neighboring states is causing rivers to swell. The Ganga and Kosi rivers are seeing rapid increases in water levels. There’s a growing concern over potential flood situations in various regions.

  • In Patna, the Ganga has crossed the warning level at Gandhi Ghat.

  • In Munger, the river is just 2 meters below the danger mark.

  • Other rivers including Kamla, Kosi, and Gandak are also surging.

This increase has heightened flood risk in low-lying districts and urban areas with poor drainage.

Monsoon Trough Line Over Bihar

The reason for this extreme rainfall is the current position of the monsoon trough line. The trough is passing directly over Bihar. In addition, low-pressure formation in South Bihar is increasing atmospheric moisture.

This combination of high humidity and heat is accelerating cloud formation, leading to intensified rainstorms. The proximity of Jharkhand and South Bihar further adds to the severity.

Weather Pattern Likely to Continue

The IMD warns that the intense weather conditions could continue for the next few days. Lightning activity, strong winds, and heavy rain are expected at frequent intervals.

Residents are advised to monitor local weather reports, stay connected with district authorities, and prepare for potential emergencies. Farmers, especially, should delay fieldwork during adverse hours.

Past Warnings and Predictions

The monsoon was relatively inactive in early July, causing concern over drought-like conditions in some areas. However, recent developments have reversed the situation. As of now, the monsoon is fully active, and the risk of flooding and lightning has increased sharply.

Advisory from Disaster Management Authorities

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has advised the following precautions:

  1. Do not take shelter under trees during storms.

  2. Avoid touching metal structures during lightning activity.

  3. Stay away from rivers, canals, and open fields.

  4. Charge phones and store drinking water in advance.

  5. Do not drive through flooded roads.

Emergency services are on standby across districts to handle floods, waterlogging, and accidents.

Bihar is now under red-zone weather conditions, and the situation demands collective caution. Monsoon, while essential for agriculture, is showing its destructive side. With all 38 districts on alert, this is one of the most widespread weather warnings in recent years.

Residents are urged to stay indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay informed via trusted weather sources. Emergency shelters have been prepared in sensitive districts. Flood monitoring stations are also active.

The state government, along with the IMD and disaster teams, is coordinating closely to mitigate risks. However, public cooperation will be key to ensuring safety during this severe monsoon spell.
