Bihar Weather Alert: IMD Issues Yellow and Orange Alerts for Thunderstorms and Rain in Several Districts

KKN Gurugram Desk | The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued yellow and orange weather alertsĀ for various parts of Bihar today, warning ofĀ thunderstorms, lightning strikes, strong winds, andĀ moderate rainfall. According to the latest forecast, bothĀ North and South BiharĀ are likely to experience weather disturbances, with varying intensities.

Yellow & Orange Alerts Explained: What They Mean

  • AĀ Yellow AlertĀ is a cautionary warning for possible thunderstorm activity with lightning and wind speeds ranging betweenĀ 30 to 40 km/h.

  • AnĀ Orange AlertĀ is a more serious notice, forecastingĀ severe weatherĀ including thunderstorms, lightning, and wind gusts up toĀ 60 km/h.

Districts Under Orange Alert Today

The following districts are underĀ Orange Alert, with potential risks of thunderstorms and strong winds:

  • East Champaran

  • West Champaran

  • Gopalganj

  • Siwan

  • Saran

  • Muzaffarpur

  • Sheohar

  • Sitamarhi

  • Madhubani

  • Darbhanga

  • Samastipur

  • Vaishali

These regions may experience wind speeds betweenĀ 50–60 km/hĀ along withĀ scattered lightning and rainfall. Residents are advised to stay indoors during storm hours and avoid sheltering under trees.

Districts Under Yellow Alert

All remaining districts of Bihar are underĀ Yellow Alert, where weather is expected to remain unstable with wind speeds ofĀ 30–40 km/h, lightning, and patchy rainfall in isolated areas.

Recent Weather Pattern: Rising Humidity and Rain Activity

On Friday, large parts of Bihar recordedĀ hot and humid conditions, leading toĀ higher maximum temperatures. Due toĀ nighttime cloud cover, there was also a notable increase inĀ minimum temperatures.

Noteworthy stats from 23 May 2025:

  • Rainfall in 22 districts – Light to moderate showers

  • Asarganj (Munger):Ā Highest rainfall atĀ 112.8 mm

  • Wind Gusts:Ā Up toĀ 30 km/hĀ in Nalanda and Sheikhpura

  • Coolest towns:Ā Sheikhpura and Pusa (Samastipur) atĀ 22.1°C

  • Hottest town:Ā Dehri (Rohtas) with a high ofĀ 40°C

Forecast for 24–31 May: More Rain Ahead

According to IMD Patna,Ā moist easterly and southeast windsĀ are gaining strength, creating favorable conditions forĀ light to moderate rainfallĀ across Bihar untilĀ 31 May 2025. There are even chances ofĀ heavy rainfallĀ at isolated locations.

Impact on Farmers and Crops

Farmers are advised to:

  • Store harvested cropsĀ in safe and dry locations

  • Avoid sowing or field activities during alert hours

  • Use proper coverings for open grain storage areas

Today’s Forecast for Patna

Patna is expected to haveĀ cloudy skiesĀ with chances ofĀ thunderstorms and rainfallĀ in some areas. On Friday, the city saw fluctuating cloud cover and rising temperatures.
