Bihar Government to Transfer ₹10,000 Each to 50 Lakh Women on September 22

Published on

The Bihar government is preparing to launch one of its most ambitious welfare initiatives aimed at empowering women financially. On September 22, the state will begin transferring ₹10,000 each into the bank accounts of 50 lakh women under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced that this program will support women in starting self-employment ventures, strengthening livelihoods, and encouraging financial independence. The first phase of the program will benefit five lakh women, with the state committing nearly ₹5,000 crore for the scheme.

A Major Step Towards Women Empowerment

The Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana has been designed to empower women through financial support. Each beneficiary will receive ₹10,000 directly into her bank account. The money can be used to start new businesses, support ongoing ventures, or invest in farming, livestock, tailoring, weaving, and handicrafts.

With Bihar gearing up for assembly elections later this year, the scheme is also being viewed as a significant political step. However, officials emphasize that its main goal is to promote women’s participation in economic activities and strengthen rural communities.

September 22: First Installment to be Transferred

On September 22, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will officially transfer the first installment. The event will be marked through a state-level program scheduled at 11 am. Women beneficiaries across Bihar will join celebrations organized at district, block, cluster, and village levels.

In this phase, five lakh women will receive money directly into their accounts. Eventually, the scheme aims to cover 50 lakh women across the state, with total financial support reaching ₹5,000 crore.

How the Money Will Be Distributed

The Chief Minister will personally oversee the transfer of funds through a live event. The Rural Development Department has already issued instructions to all district magistrates.

Celebrations will be held at multiple levels:

  • District headquarters: Each of the 38 districts will host a program chaired by the District Magistrate. Local representatives, senior officers, and at least 1,000 women associated with self-help groups will attend.

  • Block headquarters: All 534 block headquarters will host events under the chairmanship of Block Development Officers. Around 500 women from self-help groups will participate in each program.

  • Cluster level: Bihar’s 1,680 cluster-level organizations will also organize special events, with around 200 women attending at each venue.

  • Village level: More than 70,000 village organizations will host gatherings. At least 100 women from self-help groups will join the live telecast of the state-level program.

This structure ensures that women from every corner of the state can take part in the celebrations.

Direct Benefit Transfer Model

This Yojana is being implemented through a Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) model. By depositing funds directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts, the government aims to prevent leakages and ensure transparency.

The program will not only strengthen financial security but also encourage digital banking practices among rural women. Officials believe the scheme will help women become active contributors to the economy.

Online Registration and Application Process

The Bihar government has simplified the registration process for women wishing to avail themselves of the scheme. Online applications have been introduced to ensure wider participation.

So far, more than 1.05 crore women associated with Jeevika self-help groups have applied. Additionally, over 1.4 lakh women have applied to join self-help groups so they can benefit from the scheme.

Urban women can apply through the official website, while those already associated with self-help groups do not need to register again. In rural areas, applications are being collected at the village organization level.

Who is Eligible for the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana Scheme

This Yojana has been designed with specific eligibility conditions to ensure the benefits reach the right families.

  • Each family is eligible for support through one woman member.

  • Unmarried adult women without living parents are also eligible.

  • The applicant must be between 18 and 60 years old.

  • Neither the applicant nor her husband should be an income-tax payer.

  • Families where the husband or wife works in government service (regular or contractual) are not eligible.

  • Women must be members of self-help groups under Jeevika.

This framework ensures that the benefits are targeted toward families with genuine financial needs.

Role of Self-Help Groups

Self-help groups are at the heart of the mukhyamantri mahila rojgar Yojana. Women associated with these groups will directly benefit from the financial support.

Village organizations are conducting meetings where applications are collected and consolidated. Women not yet associated with self-help groups must first join them through local applications. Only then will they become eligible for financial assistance.

Officials believe that by linking the scheme with self-help groups, the program will not only distribute financial aid but also strengthen community networks and collective economic activities.

Expected Impact on Women’s Livelihood

The ₹10,000 grant is designed to help women create self-employment opportunities. Many women are expected to invest in small businesses such as tailoring, weaving, livestock rearing, or small shops. Others may use the money to support farming activities, handicrafts, or food processing units.

By encouraging women to start micro-enterprises, the government aims to boost rural employment and improve household incomes. Officials believe this scheme will create a ripple effect, as empowered women are more likely to support education, healthcare, and nutrition within their families.

Political and Social Significance

This Yojana comes at a politically significant time. Bihar will be holding assembly elections later this year, and the program may influence voter sentiment, particularly among women.

However, experts also highlight the social importance of such initiatives. Financial independence for women is critical in addressing gender inequality and ensuring inclusive development. The scheme is expected to increase women’s participation in decision-making within households and communities.

Administrative Preparations

The Rural Development Department has been preparing for the September 22 launch for weeks. District magistrates have been asked to ensure wide participation and to treat the program as a festival at the grassroots level.

Live telecasts of the main event will be broadcast across Bihar, ensuring that women in every village feel connected to the initiative. Their officials, community leaders, and self-help group members have been mobilized to spread awareness and encourage participation.

Broader Development Agenda

The Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana is part of a larger push by the Bihar government to promote welfare and development. Alongside this scheme, other initiatives are being implemented to support youth, farmers, and workers.

By launching multiple schemes simultaneously, the government hopes to strengthen its development agenda and ensure inclusive growth. For women, the direct cash transfer is expected to be a life-changing opportunity.

On September 22, Bihar will witness a historic moment as ₹10,000 is transferred into the accounts of 50 lakh women. This Yojana promises not only financial aid but also empowerment, independence, and opportunity.

The scheme highlights the government’s commitment to women’s welfare and rural development. While challenges remain, the scale and vision of the program make it one of the most significant social initiatives in Bihar in recent years.

As women prepare to receive the first installment, hopes are high that the scheme will bring lasting change to households across the state.
