KKN Gurugram Desk | As NEET UG 2025 results are about to be announced, medical aspirants in Bihar have received a significant boost. The state government has sanctioned the construction of seven new medical colleges across different districts. With a total budget allocation of ₹2,869 crore, these institutions will be developed with both academic and hospital facilities, further enhancing Bihar’s healthcare and medical education ecosystem.

This move is expected to substantially increase the number of MBBS seats in Bihar, which has been a long-standing demand of students and educational institutions alike.

Districts Selected for the New Medical Colleges

The seven districts selected for the establishment of these new government medical colleges are:

  1. Araria

  2. Banka

  3. Jehanabad

  4. Aurangabad

  5. Nawada

  6. Kaimur

  7. Khagaria

Land acquisition in several of these districts has already been completed, and in the remaining districts, the process is expected to be finalized shortly. Each medical college will also include a fully equipped hospital, ensuring a practical learning environment for students and quality healthcare services for the public.

Current Medical College Infrastructure in Bihar

As of now, Bihar has a total of 21 operational medical colleges, out of which 13 are government-run and 8 are private medical colleges. The number of available MBBS seats is still relatively limited when compared to the growing number of NEET aspirants in the state.

The total number of MBBS seats available in these government colleges adds up to approximately 1,615 seats. With the addition of new colleges, this figure is expected to grow significantly over the next few years.

Ongoing Construction of Medical Colleges in 10 Other Districts

In addition to the newly approved colleges, the construction of medical colleges is already underway in 10 more districts of Bihar. These include:

  • Sitamarhi

  • Jhanjharpur

  • Siwan

  • Buxar

  • Jamui

  • Begusarai

  • Vaishali

  • Munger

  • Supaul

  • Arrah

These projects are in various stages of development and are part of a broader push to expand the state’s medical education capacity.

Why This Move Matters for NEET Aspirants

For thousands of students appearing for the NEET UG examination each year, admission into a government medical college is highly competitive due to the limited number of seats. This decision to add seven more colleges comes at a crucial time and brings the following advantages:

  • More MBBS seats mean better chances for qualified students.

  • Local admissions help retain talent within the state.

  • Reduced migration to other states for medical education.

  • Lower cost burden for students who cannot afford private medical colleges.

This move is particularly impactful given that Bihar has consistently ranked among the states with high NEET registration numbers but limited seat availability.

Budget Allocation and Planning

The state government has sanctioned a budget of ₹2,869 crore for the construction of the seven new colleges. This budget includes:

  • Acquisition of land

  • Construction of academic buildings and hospitals

  • Procurement of medical and laboratory equipment

  • Setting up residential facilities for staff and students

  • Administrative and operational expenses

Each college is expected to be equipped with modern medical labs, operation theaters, and a hospital with inpatient and outpatient departments.

Impact on Bihar’s Healthcare Ecosystem

Apart from educational benefits, these colleges will help bridge the gap in healthcare access in under-served districts. Currently, many regions of Bihar face a shortage of qualified doctors, particularly in rural areas. Each new college hospital will provide:

  • Free or subsidized healthcare for local residents

  • Internship opportunities for medical students

  • Emergency and trauma care in remote districts

  • Better maternal and child health services

Thus, this initiative aligns with Bihar’s broader public health mission to bring affordable healthcare to every district.

National Medical Commission (NMC) and Regulatory Approvals

Before these colleges can admit students, they must be approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC). This includes:

  • Site inspection

  • Infrastructure validation

  • Faculty appointments

  • Clinical material availability

  • Teaching hospital readiness

State authorities are expected to begin construction in 2025 and apply for NMC approval well ahead of expected admissions starting 2027-28.

Expert Opinions and Reactions

Health policy experts and academic professionals have welcomed the move.

Dr. R.N. Sinha, a retired medical educationist, commented:

“This expansion was long overdue. Medical education and health infrastructure go hand in hand. With this decision, Bihar is catching up with national standards.”

NEET coaching centers in Patna and Gaya have reported a surge in inquiries after the news was released, indicating a renewed sense of hope among students and parents.

Long-Term Vision: One Medical College in Every District

Bihar’s Health and Education departments are jointly working on a vision to establish at least one government medical college in every district by 2030. The strategy includes:

  • Phased construction of colleges

  • Leveraging central and state funding

  • Recruiting qualified faculty and healthcare professionals

  • Promoting research and development in medical science

This vision not only aims at self-sufficiency in medical education but also at transforming Bihar into a healthcare hub for eastern India.

With the approval of 7 new government medical colleges and 10 more under construction, Bihar is entering a transformative phase in medical education. NEET aspirants can now hope for:

  • Increased availability of MBBS seats

  • Better-quality education close to home

  • Affordable healthcare education in public institutions

  • Long-term benefits for public health in Bihar

This initiative stands as a landmark in the educational and healthcare policies of the state, setting the tone for future growth and development.
