IIT Hyderabad Launches India’s First AI-Powered Driverless Bus

Published on

IIT Hyderabad has taken a historic step by introducing AI-powered driverless buses on its campus. This marks India’s first frontline testing of such autonomous public transport technology. Over the past few days, these buses have carried more than 10,000 passengers, with 90% expressing high satisfaction.

First-of-its-Kind Autonomous Bus Service in India

The driverless buses operate entirely without human intervention, using advanced sensors and AI software. Two variants are currently in service—one seating 14 passengers and the other accommodating 6. The trial has already demonstrated that the system is not just an experiment but a practical mobility solution for Indian conditions.

How the Technology Works

These buses are equipped with AI-based software, LiDAR-powered navigation, and multiple advanced safety systems. Features like Autonomous Emergency Braking allow the buses to detect obstacles and stop instantly when required. The system adjusts speed according to surrounding movement and maintains a safe distance from other vehicles or objects.

Passenger Response and Experience

In a short span, the driverless buses have transported over 10,000 people within the campus. Around 90% of passengers reported a positive experience, calling the ride smooth, safe, and futuristic. This positive feedback indicates growing public trust in driverless transportation in India.

TiHAN Project: The Innovation Hub Behind the Technology

The technology has been developed entirely in-house by IIT Hyderabad’s TiHAN (Technology Innovation Hub on Autonomous Navigation) team. Both the hardware and software systems were designed and tested within the campus.

The project, valued at approximately ₹132 crore, is being recognized as India’s first autonomous navigation testbed. TiHAN aims to set global benchmarks in autonomous mobility research and practical deployment.

Future Deployment Beyond Campus

Currently, these buses operate only in controlled environments like the IIT Hyderabad campus. However, government agencies are exploring possibilities for broader adoption.

In the near future, such AI-powered driverless buses could be deployed in low-traffic zones. Potential locations include airports, industrial areas, large college campuses, and government-controlled public roads.

Launching this service is a major milestone in India’s push towards intelligent transportation. It demonstrates the country’s capability to design, test, and operate advanced driverless systems tailored to local conditions.

With continued research and regulatory support, India could soon see these autonomous buses becoming part of daily public transport networks, reducing human error and enhancing commuter safety.
