KKN Gurugram Desk | Balrampur (Uttar Pradesh) — In a heart-wrenching road accident that shook the residents of Uttar Pradesh’s Balrampur districtfive people, including two young brothers, lost their lives, and seven others sustained critical injuries. The victims were returning home after attending a wedding ceremony when their car was struck head-on by a speeding truck.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, around 2:00 AM, near Chakwa village on the Bahraich Road. The passengers were part of a wedding procession returning to Gonda district. As of this report, all the injured are receiving treatment at the District Memorial Hospital in Balrampur, while the local police have informed the victims’ families.

Accident Site: Chakwa Village, Bahraich Road

The fatal collision took place when a Maruti Ertiga, carrying 12 passengers, was returning from Bhulaiya village in Shrawasti district, where they had attended a wedding. As the car reached the Chakwa village turn, a truck coming from the opposite direction rammed into it at high speed.

The impact of the crash was devastating. Five of the passengers died on the spot, while others were trapped inside the crushed vehicle until locals and police arrived to rescue them.

Victims of the Accident: Families Torn Apart

The deceased were identified as:

  • Abhay Kumar (26), son of Suryabali Arya, resident of Allahabad – driver of the car

  • Phool Babu (30), son of Mohan Lal, resident of Dhanepur, Gonda

  • Jeevan (25), son of Vinod Kumar, resident of Dhanepur, and his younger brother

  • Aditya (8), son of Vinod Kumar – both brothers died together in the crash

  • Vijay Kumar (45), son of Bachha Lal, resident of Ittiyathok, Gonda

These individuals were close relatives and friends of the groom’s family. The loss of two young children—Aditya and Jeevan, who were real brothers—has plunged the entire Madhyanagar village in mourning.

Injured Passengers: Battling for Life in Hospital

The following individuals sustained serious injuries and are being treated at Balrampur’s District Memorial Hospital:

  1. Vikas Kumar (12), son of Vinod Kumar, Dhanepur

  2. Sitaram (60), resident of Basantpur, Ittiyathok

  3. Mehak (4), daughter of Kaushal, resident of Madhyanagar

  4. Gopal (8), son of Phool Babu, Dhanepur

  5. Raghav Ram (55), Basantpur resident

  6. Kishor Kumar (35), Madhyanagar resident

  7. Vinod Kumar (50), father of two deceased children, also injured

Doctors have confirmed that several of the injured are in critical condition, with multiple fractures and internal injuries. They are being monitored closely in the emergency ward.

How the Accident Happened: Initial Investigation

According to Balrampur Police, the wedding party was en route from Shrawasti to Ittiyathok after attending the marriage of Babbiraj, son of Ram Sewak from Madhyanagar. The Ertiga car was overcrowded, carrying 12 individuals in a vehicle designed for 7 passengers.

At around 2:00 AM, while navigating a curve near Chakwa, the car collided head-on with a heavy-duty truck traveling at high speed. The truck did not stop after the collision, and a manhunt is underway to trace the vehicle.

Primary causes identified:

  • Overcrowding in the passenger vehicle

  • Speeding truck on a narrow rural road

  • Possible fatigue or sleepiness of drivers during night-time travel

Police Response and Rescue Operation

Police from the nearby Rehra Bazar police station rushed to the spot after receiving calls from locals who heard the loud crash. Rescue operations continued for nearly two hours as authorities used cutting equipment to extract victims trapped in the mangled vehicle.

The deceased were taken for postmortem examinations, while the injured were shifted to Balrampur District Hospital in police and ambulance vans.

Balrampur SP issued a statement saying:

“We are investigating the cause of the accident and trying to identify the truck involved. FIR has been registered, and we are taking strict action.”

Grief and Mourning in Gonda District

News of the accident spread like wildfire in Gonda’s Ittiyathok and Dhanepur blocks, where most victims lived. As soon as the bereaved families were informed, chaos broke out in their homes. Neighbors and relatives gathered in large numbers as wails of sorrow echoed through the lanes.

Local reactions:

  • “They left for a wedding in joy, and now we’re receiving their dead bodies,” said one relative.

  • “Two small children… gone in an instant. How will their parents live now?” said a grieving neighbor.

Villagers have also criticized the lack of proper lighting and signage on the Bahraich road, demanding immediate infrastructure improvements.

Frequent Accidents in the Region: A Safety Concern

This tragedy is not an isolated incident. The Bahraich–Balrampur road has become notorious for frequent fatal accidents. Locals report:

  • Poor road conditions

  • Lack of night-time patrolling

  • Reckless driving by truck operators

  • Absence of speed breakers or caution signs

According to official data, Balrampur district has witnessed over 120 road accidents in the past year, with at least 45 fatalities, many of which occurred during the night hours.

Government Reaction and Compensation

As of now, the state government has not released an official compensation statement. However, local administrative officers have confirmed that the families of the deceased will receive relief assistance under the CM’s Emergency Fund.

Demands from local leaders include:

  • ₹5 lakh compensation for each deceased

  • Free medical treatment for the injured

  • Installation of streetlights and traffic signage on accident-prone stretches

  • Regulation of overloaded private vehicles during weddings

Precautions for Safe Travel During Weddings

With wedding season in full swing, authorities are urging families to prioritize travel safety. Overcrowding vehicles and driving late at night on poorly lit highways significantly increase accident risks.

Safety Tips:

  • Do not exceed the passenger capacity of vehicles

  • Avoid night travel on rural highways

  • Use licensed drivers with proper rest

  • Ensure seat belts are worn at all times

  • Always have emergency medical contacts ready

What began as a joyous wedding celebration turned into a night of unimaginable sorrow for families in Gonda. The accident serves as a grim reminder of the fragility of life and the critical importance of road safety.

Authorities must act swiftly — not just in investigating this incident, but in preventing future tragedies through road reforms, stronger traffic law enforcement, and public awareness campaigns.
