Sudha, Amul, and Rail Neer Reduce Prices After GST Rate Revision

Published on

Consumers in Bihar have reason to celebrate. From September 22, 2025, popular dairy brands like Sudha and Amul will offer their products at reduced prices. Even Rail Neer, the packaged drinking water available at railway stations, will be cheaper.

The announcement came on Saturday when COMFED, the cooperative behind Sudha Dairy, revealed that the price reduction was possible due to changes in GST rates. The revised structure has simplified the taxation system and directly benefited everyday products.

Price Reduction in Sudha Products

Sudha, a household name across Bihar, has officially reduced the prices of several dairy products. This includes butter, paneer, milk, and ghee. The reduction ranges between one and ten rupees depending on the product size and packaging.

The revised price list is as follows:

  • Table Butter (50 gm): ₹31 instead of ₹32

  • Table Butter (100 gm): ₹55 instead of ₹56

  • Table Butter (500 gm): ₹270 instead of ₹275

  • Paneer (100 gm): ₹46 instead of ₹47

  • Paneer (200 gm): ₹85 instead of ₹90

  • Paneer (500 gm): ₹205 instead of ₹210

  • Toned Milk (Tetra Pack 1000 ml): ₹73 instead of ₹74

  • DTM Milk (1000 ml): ₹68 instead of ₹70

  • Special Pouch Ghee (500 ml): ₹315 instead of ₹320

  • Tetra Pack Ghee (500 ml): ₹325 instead of ₹330

  • Special Tin Pack Ghee (1 kg): ₹640 instead of ₹650

This direct reduction ensures that the benefit reaches the consumers immediately.

Amul Also Announces Major Price Cuts

In a parallel move, Amul has also slashed prices for nearly 700 of its products. From butter and ghee to paneer, chocolates, bakery items, and frozen snacks, many products will now be more affordable.

The new rates, effective from September 22, reflect the GST cut. Amul has clarified that it intends to pass the entire benefit of GST rate revision to consumers.

This move will likely increase sales volumes and offer relief to households battling rising inflation.

Rail Neer to be Cheaper

Not only dairy products, but even Rail Neer, the packaged drinking water sold at railway stations, will be available at reduced prices.

This is particularly important for millions of passengers who depend on Rail Neer during travel. The revised price will make safe drinking water more affordable, offering direct savings to railway commuters.

GST Council’s Decision and Its Impact

The recent GST Council meeting played a crucial role in enabling these price cuts. The council decided to simplify the tax system by reducing four tax slabs to just two.

Now, only two GST rates are applicable: 5% and 18%. Previously, slabs of 12% and 28% were also in force, making taxation complex and products costlier.

The streamlined structure has allowed companies like COMFED and Amul to lower prices of essential goods.

Relief for Consumers

Experts believe this price reduction will significantly benefit consumers, especially in Bihar where dairy products form a staple part of daily consumption.

Items like milk, curd, paneer, and ghee are used daily in households. Even a small cut in prices translates into noticeable savings for families.

Additionally, products like Rail Neer and bakery items being cheaper means inflationary pressure on common households will ease.

Importance of Dairy Brands in Bihar

Sudha is deeply rooted in Bihar’s socio-economic fabric. COMFED, which manages Sudha, has ensured the supply of quality milk and dairy products for decades.

Amul, though based in Gujarat, has a strong presence in Bihar as well. Together, Sudha and Amul dominate the dairy market, shaping consumer spending on essential products.

The latest reduction strengthens their consumer-friendly image and adds trust at a crucial time when inflation concerns remain high.

Economic Significance

Price reductions in basic commodities like milk and butter have ripple effects. When household budgets ease, consumer confidence grows.

This may lead to increased spending in other areas of the economy, supporting local businesses. Economists argue that tax reforms combined with lower product prices can stimulate demand and balance inflationary trends.

Political and Social Angle

In Bihar, where politics and economics often intersect, such announcements carry significant weight. With assembly elections around the corner, the timing of the price cuts is being noticed by political observers.

Cheaper dairy products and water resonate strongly with voters, particularly in rural areas where daily expenses weigh heavily on families.

Market Competition

The decision by Sudha and Amul may also push other dairy cooperatives and private brands to reduce prices. Consumers may prefer established and trusted brands over lesser-known competitors.

The competition could ultimately benefit buyers, creating a price-correction wave across the dairy industry.

Long-Term Outlook

The reduction is expected to boost sales volumes for both Sudha and Amul. Consumers who earlier limited purchases due to price hikes may now return to regular buying patterns.

This move may also encourage long-term loyalty toward these brands. With GST reforms in place, such reductions may continue, creating a stable pricing environment for essential goods.

Expert Opinion

Consumer rights activists have welcomed the move, calling it a step in the right direction. They highlight that such price cuts should be extended to more products in the future.

Market analysts note that the timing, just before festive season, is ideal. With festivals like Navratri and Diwali approaching, demand for milk, sweets, and dairy products traditionally increases. Lower prices may lead to a surge in consumption.

The price reduction in Sudha dairy products, Amul goods, and Rail Neer is a major relief for consumers in Bihar. Effective from September 22, this move will reduce daily expenses and provide much-needed respite from inflation.

The simplified GST structure has directly contributed to these lower prices, proving the positive impact of tax reforms.

As families prepare for the festive season, this announcement is a welcome development. It demonstrates how economic policies, when implemented effectively, can bring real benefits to the common citizen.
