In a significant development for medical aspirants, the Madras High Court has directed the National Testing Agency (NTA) to conduct a re-examination for NEET UG 2025 candidates who were unable to properly attempt the test on May 4 due to a severe storm and sudden power outage. The incident, which occurred at several exam centers, left candidates in complete darkness, making it impossible for them to complete their paper under standard conditions.

The court’s ruling comes as a major relief to affected students and their families, many of whom had approached the judiciary seeking justice after the incident disrupted one of the most crucial entrance exams in India.

Background: What Happened on May 4 During NEET UG 2025?

On May 4, 2025, lakhs of students across India appeared for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) — the national-level examination for undergraduate medical admissions. However, students at some centers in Tamil Nadu and nearby states faced severe weather conditions, including thunderstorms, high winds, and a total power outage.

Due to the lack of electricity and backup lighting, candidates were unable to:

  • Clearly read the question paper

  • Fill their OMR sheets correctly

  • Manage time effectively

Despite these challenges, the exam continued without being paused or rescheduled, which led to massive dissatisfaction among affected students.

High Court Steps In: Relief for Affected NEET Aspirants

Following multiple petitions, the Madras High Court took note of the severity of the situation and ordered the NTA to conduct a re-exam for students who faced genuine disruption during the original NEET UG paper.

The court stated:

“No student should be denied a fair opportunity due to external, uncontrollable factors. The sanctity of a national-level entrance test must be preserved.”

This directive has now put the ball in NTA’s court, which will soon announce the fresh examination date, list of eligible candidates, and standard protocols for the re-test.

How Will This Affect NEET UG Counseling 2025?

The court’s ruling may lead to a delay in the NEET UG 2025 counseling process conducted by the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC).

Potential impacts:

  • Round 1 of counseling may be postponed until re-exam results are declared.

  • Merit lists will be revised to include scores from re-test candidates.

  • State counseling processes (conducted separately by respective medical directorates) may also be impacted.

Experts suggest that the counseling process, which usually begins in mid-July, might now start in early August 2025.

What About Other Petitions and Grace Mark Demands?

The NEET UG 2025 has seen an unprecedented number of legal challenges this year:

  • A candidate who scored 98.86 percentile recently approached the court, demanding grace marks due to technical issues at his exam center.

  • Several students have also alleged discrepancies in OMR sheet evaluations and delays in scorecard access.

While the High Court has responded positively to today’s re-exam plea, the larger question of systemic reform in NEET administration remains under scrutiny.

What Should Affected Students Know Now?

Who is eligible for the re-exam?

  • Students who appeared at centers affected by power outage and natural disruptions.

  • Verification will be based on center reports, student complaints, and affidavits submitted in court.

What is the expected timeline?

  • NTA is likely to announce re-exam details by July 7, 2025.

  • The retest may be conducted mid-July, with results declared in 10 days.

  • MCC and state counseling authorities will synchronize their processes accordingly.

How to stay updated?

NEET UG 2025: Numbers at a Glance

  • Exam Date: May 4, 2025

  • Initial Result Date: June 14, 2025

  • Top Score: 720/720 (as per official report)

  • Controversies:

    • Power failure in Tamil Nadu

    • Server issues at some centers

    • Grace marks and reevaluation petitions

Expert Reactions on the Re-Exam Order

Education experts and legal analysts have widely supported the High Court’s order.

Prof. Anurag Sinha, Career Counselor:

“The court’s decision reinforces the right to equal opportunity in competitive exams. The re-exam ensures that deserving candidates are not left behind due to administrative or environmental challenges.”

However, he also cautioned:

“The NTA must now be extra vigilant in conducting the retest without any glitches.”

The Madras High Court’s decision to order a NEET UG 2025 re-exam for students affected by a natural calamity and power outage is a landmark ruling that emphasizes fairness and transparency in national entrance exams. While it may lead to a temporary delay in counseling and admissions, it also restores hope for aspirants who lost their chance due to unforeseen circumstances.

As students await further announcements from the NTA and MCC, they are advised to remain patient and stay updated only through official sources.
