KKN Gurugram Desk | In recent times, UPI (Unified Payments Interface) apps like PhonePe and Google Pay have become integral tools for digital transactions in India. However, there is a growing concern about cyber frauds involving counterfeit apps mimicking legitimate payment platforms. According to reports, cybercriminals have developed fake versions of popular UPI apps such as PhonePe and Google Pay to deceive merchants and traders. These fraudulent apps are designed to trick merchants into thinking they’ve received payments when, in reality, the money has never been transferred. In this article, we’ll explore how these fake apps operate, the risks involved, and how merchants can protect themselves from this new wave of cyber fraud.

How Fake UPI Apps Work: A New Scheme of Cyber Fraud

Cyber fraud is not a new concept, but the methods criminals use are constantly evolving. According to a report by Deccan Chronicle, cyber experts have recently uncovered a new type of scam where fake UPI apps are used to defraud unsuspecting merchants. These apps, which closely resemble real UPI apps like PhonePe or Google Pay, function in a way that misleads the merchant into believing that a payment has been made, when in fact, it has not.

In simple terms, let’s say you’re a merchant who uses a sound box to confirm UPI payments. When a customer makes a payment using one of these fake UPI apps, the sound box will emit the usual sound indicating payment has been received. However, the merchant later realizes that no money has actually been transferred to their account.

This form of cyber fraud is particularly dangerous because it exploits the busy nature of business operations. Merchants, often distracted with multiple customers or tasks, rely on the sound box alert as confirmation of payment without checking the actual transaction status. As a result, they fall victim to fraud.

Fake UPI Apps: The Growing Threat

According to experts, cybercriminals have become more sophisticated in their tactics. They now create fake payment gateways that closely mimic legitimate UPI apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, and others. These fake apps provide fraudulent payment notifications that appear to be genuine. Some of these counterfeit apps go to the extent of simulating the entire payment process, including showing a “successful payment” notification on the merchant’s device.

Since merchants are often busy attending to customers, they tend to trust the sound alerts from their sound box, assuming that payment has been successfully received. However, the reality is that the money has not been credited to their bank accounts, and they have fallen victim to this clever scam.

Rising Concern Among Merchants: No Official Case Yet

While cyber experts have identified this new form of cyber fraud, no formal complaints or cases have been registered so far. Authorities, however, have issued a cautionary statement urging merchants to be vigilant. They have advised traders to verify payments manually rather than relying solely on the sound box alerts. Merchants should always cross-check their bank accounts or UPI apps to confirm whether the payment has actually been received.

It is crucial for merchants to realize that relying solely on the sound box for verification is not enough. The fraudulent app can easily mimic the payment confirmation sound, leaving the merchant unaware of the scam until it’s too late.

Key Precautions to Avoid Falling Victim to Fraud

1. Always Verify the Payment

While UPI payments are generally safe and secure, cybercriminals are constantly finding new ways to deceive users. If you are a merchant receiving UPI payments, it is important to always verify the payment. Don’t rely solely on the sound box alert. Once the sound box beeps, make sure to check your bank account or UPI app to confirm that the money has been transferred.

2. Don’t Trust Fake Payment Notifications

Fraudulent apps are designed to send fake notifications that look similar to legitimate UPI apps. These notifications may show a successful payment message, but it’s important to verify whether the funds have actually been credited to your account. Always double-check the status of the transaction on your phone or banking app.

3. Report Suspicious Activities

If you encounter any suspicious transactions or suspect that someone is using a fake UPI app, it’s crucial to report it to the authorities immediately. Do not engage with the fraudster, and ensure that you inform the police about the fraudulent activity. The faster you report the scam, the easier it will be to prevent further incidents.

4. Update Your Apps Regularly

To protect yourself from potential fraud, ensure that your UPI apps, like PhonePe or Google Pay, are always updated to the latest version. Regular updates often include important security patches that protect you from newly discovered vulnerabilities.

5. Educate Your Staff

If you are a business owner with multiple employees handling UPI payments, it is important to educate your staff about the risks of fake UPI apps. Make sure they understand how to verify payments and are aware of the latest fraud trends.

6. Use Only Trusted Platforms

Always ensure that the apps you download are from official sources like the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Avoid downloading apps from third-party platforms, as these are more likely to be malicious.

How to Identify Fake UPI Apps: Red Flags to Watch Out For

  1. App Source: Always download UPI apps only from trusted sources like the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Fake apps often originate from third-party websites or messaging apps like Telegram.

  2. App Interface: Pay attention to the interface of the app. Fake apps may have slight design discrepancies or missing features compared to the original apps.

  3. Permissions: Check the permissions the app requests. Be cautious if an app asks for unnecessary permissions, such as access to your contacts or camera.

  4. App Reviews: Read user reviews before downloading an app. If the reviews seem fake or overly generic, it might be a red flag.

  5. Verify Payment Notifications: After receiving a payment notification, always check your UPI account or bank app to verify that the transaction has been completed.

Online payment platforms like UPI are essential for modern commerce, but with the rise of cyber fraud, it’s crucial for merchants and consumers alike to stay vigilant. Fake UPI apps are just one of the many ways cybercriminals are trying to exploit people. By following simple security measures and verifying every payment, you can protect yourself from falling victim to these scams.

Merchants, especially those dealing with a high volume of transactions, should be cautious and adopt a proactive approach to payment verification. Cross-checking payment details and keeping up with the latest security trends can go a long way in ensuring that your business remains safe from fraud.
